It is bizarre to me that the Government chooses to have a formal presence on any privately owned social media platform in the first place. (That’s not to suggest publicly owned social media isn’t potentially problematic, but private businesses have no public accountability at all.)

It was seeking to show the relative net collective impact of the immediate families of asylum seekers vs originally resident families and economic migrants. I remember the initial comment, as an aside to the stats, was the notably high proportion of NHS doctors in the asylum group.

I saw reference to some nascent research a couple of years ago about the careers and economic impact of second generation former asylum seekers - I wish I had made a note of who was doing it.

One thing all this has exposed that I will never forget is the size of the really unpleasant, impenetrable, racist underbelly many of us had previously believed was a crank minority. And the fact that otherwise perfectly nice people can hold repulsive views, and believe they are well intentioned.

When the alternative is a better overall quality of life for everyone, the only people who would want that are too arrogant to recognise their own good fortune.

It is interesting that he has not issued proceedings against the Guardian for their original article, despite his threats before publication. He’s a relatively experienced litigant, so one can only assume he doesn’t think he’d be able to rebut the truth of the article, or show reputational damage.

Unfortunately for Farage, whether or not he acted with “malice” is irrelevant when it comes to harassing people. The important thing is how his repeated behaviour made them feel.

My grandfather had is left hand tied behind his back at school to make him use his right. Unsurprisingly impacted his self confidence, ability to trust, temper etc. Also he probably was on the spectrum but probably would have dealt with that in much the same way!

I’d skip a step and remove their ability to issue pardons in the first place. And if the legal system can’t rectify miscarriages of justice itself, surely it needs to be reformed!
