We know public debt traps families in poverty and holds them there. Our research into the public debt crisis, with @opfs.org.uk & @trussellscot.bsky.social, highlights how families with a disabled child are at higher risk of being trapped in poverty due to public debt. #CPW25 #ChallengePoverty

This #ChallengePovertyWeek we're continuing our campaign to #EndSchoolMealDebt & #EndHiddenHunger in school for good. We're calling on @ScotGov to make the school meal debt fund permanent & extend free school meals to all low-income families, because no child should have to go hungry at school.

New @aberlourcharity.bsky.social research highlighting school meal debt in England, indicating that nearly 1 in 4 pupils not eligible for free school meals has school meal debt. We are calling on UK Gov to take action to tackle school meal debt & hidden school hunger in its Child Poverty Strategy.👇

Today, with Unity Consulting Scotland, we’ve launched our new research into School Meal Debt in England.  Our research indicates that 1 in 4 children in England not in receipt of FSM have school meal debt. No child should be burdened with debt or denied a school meal due to financial hardship.

We’re calling on the UK Government to include in its upcoming Child Poverty Strategy clear action to tackle school meal debt:
1️⃣ Introduce a school meal debt fund to support struggling families and schools
2️⃣ Extend Free School Meal eligibility to all low-income families

It's encouraging to read that the Government is preparing to lift the two-child limit as part of its child poverty strategy, but disheartening that options short of scrapping it entirely are still being considered.

🧵on why this would be the wrong choice for an ambitious strategy⤵️

If UK Gov is truly committed to tackling child poverty then only option on the cards is ending 2 child limit entirely. Anything less means continuing a poverty creating policy, that still pushes children and families into poverty. The 2 child limit must go. End of.

To reduce child poverty, government must scrap the two-chid limit. And that means fully scrapping it – no benefit cap, no tapers, no new limit. All children deserve the best start in life, and messing around the edges of this policy won’t cut it. 2/2

These are some of the most extreme restrictions on immigration in years. We're told to see them as benign because they're less bad than Farage's far-right extremism. But they are still terrible.

Good to hear @ross-greer.bsky.social focus on the issue of problem public debt and CTax arrears. @aberlourcharity.bsky.social evidence shows low income families are facing a public debt crisis. Reducing child poverty must mean tackling public debt. Reforming CTax recovery is a good place to start.
