Absolutely fair enough if you can pull it off. Makes it easier if you want to play a friend's instrument or sit in on open mic. I think our own experiences might not be matched by others though, so it's important to try before committing.

When I started guitar I tried it both ways in a shop to see what felt right. It was an absolutely clear choice for me, left handed felt far more natural. Glad I didn't fight it. It's harder to find instruments, but not that bad, especially if you just need one to play and not a collection.
