Bought my tickets for the Stockholm International Film Festival. Eleven movies in nine days.

Since I've usually had a job where I controlled my own schedule, I tend to catch daytime screenings.

The people who wrote the descriptions of the Film Festival's movies have a completely different set of cinematic references than mine. They keep saying "This is similar to the classic 'Murky Budgerigar'" or "Clear influences from Nasturtia Wong", and I have no idea.

Va? Det är väl […]

Stockholm International Film Festival 2024
Turn Me On I skipped the Monsters of Film festival this year because it had none of the scifi, fantasy and comedy programming I look for there, focusing on horror which is not my genre. I attended the Stockholm International for the tenth time in eleven years and watched twelve movies. Unless noted otherwise, all the movies are from this year and haven’t seen theatrical release yet. Six get my special recommendation: * _Turn Me On._ You live in an up-scale gated community where everyone’s on strong emotion suppressants and nobody remembers the outside world. What happens when you fail one morning to take that pill? * _Assessment._ After ecological collapse, couples who want children have to undergo assessment. Alicia Vikander moves in with you for a week and inflicts 1970s confrontation therapy on you 24/7. * _Riefenstahl._ Starkly illuminating portrait of a dynamic artist who loved strength and beauty and had a really well-developed ability to look away from weakness and ugliness. * _Peacock._ The star actor at a Viennese rent-a-friend agency starts to wonder who he really is and goes off the rails. * _Bob Trevino Likes It._ Lonely young woman finds a replacement dad on Facebook and he proves to actually be a decent and caring man. Very sentimental but also carried by several really strong actors. * _Rumours._ At a summit in a German forest, the leaders of the G7 countries slip into what appears to be a shared dream. It makes very little sense but is pretty funny. Three were OK: * _The Uninvited_. Senile old movie actress crashes a cocktail party in her former home in the Hollywood Hills. She however fails to have much impact on an evening of meandering dialogue scenes about other people’s regrets. * _Bring Them Down_. Two economically marginal Irish sheep farming families go full Cú Chullain on each other over misunderstandings about livestock. Why does 32-y-o Barry Keoghan keep getting cast as a teenager? * _The Pirate Bay._ I watched 1½ episode of this Swedish TV drama series about the people and events around the creation of the illicit file sharing service. It was fine but I never cared much about file sharing. And three were duds: * _History of a Family._ Slow and conventional story about your kid’s school friend who gets beaten at home and starts spending a lot of time at your house. * _Sister Midnight._ Poor young newly-wed couple from the country moves into Indian megacity. She is bored and restless, he is decent but uncomprehending, nothing much happens. * _Frogman_ (2023). Failing film maker takes two friends and an old camcorder on a road trip to make a poorly planned, no-budget documentary about the cryptid he filmed as a child. I was embarrassed. _Here aremy capsule reviews from the 2023 film festival season in Stockholm._ ## Author: Martin R Dr. Martin Rundkvist is a Swedish archaeologist, journal editor, skeptic, atheist, lefty liberal, bookworm, boardgamer, geocacher and father of two. But there is also the opposite strategy. I once had a poorly prepared student reply with the single word "gånggrift" (passage tomb) to 7 of the 30 questions. Because archaeologists care a lot about burials, and passage tombs are one type that is found in Scandinavia.

"Gånggrift" turned out to […]

Just to clarify: this means that a lot of the time we can't tell a structure from AD 600 apart from another one from AD 667.

Looking at the reigns of murderous dictators, I find that almost none of them survive long enough for prehistoric archaeology's methods to be able to tell the time before them apart from the time after them. Hitler's twelve years, Stalin's twenty-eight -- those are blips in our chronology. We […]

Juniorette is combining Sweden's most elite industry CEO degree programme with massive organising engagement in student social activities. I think the strain is starting to show. But she's quite robust. I'm not super worried.

Do I know anyone who knows someone who has worked professionally with academic hiring in Denmark? Perhaps a recent professor emeritus in the #humanities. I need help to improve an important job application. I am happy to pay a fee.

The "max 3 sentences" rule stops an annoying type of recurring student behaviour, where when lacking quality knowledge they go for quantity and write a wall of semi-relevant text in the hopes that this will earn them points.

My exam habits for archaeology 101 students are #llm proof. I like to give them a sheet with 30 questions. You can get max 2 pts each. You are allowed to reply with max 3 sentences each. You do this with pen and paper, live in a room with your fellow students.

I'm old enough now to have seen some major tech history. My first modem in '88 ran off the copper-wire phone net's current and offered 1200 bps down, 75 up. Because it was designed for Swedish Videotex where you couldn't really upload data, just key presses in menus. I used it to access FidoNet […]
