Who could have predicted that trade would blow up? Shocking. If I believed in it, this would be the ultimate example of karma.

That is an interesting stat.

Always fun to see that guy get ratio'd

16. Owners that are happy to lose 100 million pounds a year on a club are either sportswashing something (ala City, PSG, and Newcastle) or are morons. FSG have been successful by every metric. But fans are so overwhelmed by transfer media and gaming that they measure success though net spend only.

15. Grav's impact was expected, but the scope wasn't expected until Zubimendi was late 20's and then sold on. When thinking of FSG transfers, think about the senior players AND the youth players. 2 years ago, Conor Bradley was a promising right back on loan. Owen Beck at LB us a name to remember.

14. They pay high market transfer fees for high character players who fit specific age and position models. When they went for Zubimendi, it was because they had holding midfielders at the 20 and 22 year old levels (Bajcetic and Gravenberch) with a mid 20's slot available.

13. FSG are committed to the LA Masia model. They have invested in an already strong academy, and have neeaggresive in acquiring players in their mid teens from other academies. Bajcetic, Clark, Niyoni, Nallo, Rio...all high six or seven figure acquisitions from other academies.

12. Comments after the game which saw Liverpool climb to a minimum of six points clear, with a game in hand, were focused on Darwin Nunez and Andy Robertson. Why? Because the fans have been taught to demand, expect, and rely on "signings." So they look for reasons to sell players so we can buy more.

11. But after watching a win at the rebuilt and expanded Anfield, seeing training videos from the club's world class academy, first team training spaces, and a revitalized Mellwood home for Liverpool Women, a significant minority of fans go to X and Blue Sky and demand FSGOUT.

10. Pre-transfer media and fan social media madness, Liverpool's trophy haul (which eclipses anything seen at the club since the 80's), competitiveness (which has seen league title challenges from three different managers,) and infrastructure, fans would be universally enthusiastic.
December 27, 2024 at 3:56 PM
9. Liverpool have gone the other way. Over the last decade plus since they were purchased from the wreckage of administration (thanks to the previous British owners) and diabolical stewardship (thanks to a pair of out of depth American owners) FSG have followed a disciplined approach.

8. During the last 10+ years, Manchester United have consistently been obesity of the two highest net spenders in the Premier League. The results? Cup trophies, a gradual decline in league placement, and an abdication of infrastructure responsibility. Carrington and Old Trafford are embarassments.

7. Manchester United are the other shining example, although English football is replete with examples. They historically built through their academy, and added outside players in positions where there was a clearly differentiated superiority. That model ended at the same time as Barca's.

6. Pushed by Spanish media and agents, Barcelona embarked on a mission to "compete for signings." And they won many big signings. But they lost their place at the games highest level, and have had to sell large amounts of future club revenues to remain solvent.
December 27, 2024 at 3:45 PM
5. Barcelona used to rely on LA Masia, which through the end of the 2010's was producing a majority of their teams, with sales of those players giving them funds to purchase the occasional established superstar from elsewhere. They were financially solid and always competitive for the big honors.
December 27, 2024 at 3:43 PM
4. Fans, who get all of their sports information from transfer-focused media or EA Sports games are now convinced that exterior recruitment is the only way to truly succeed. The mentality even forced Barcelona to abandon its core values, to the detriment near ruin of the club.
December 27, 2024 at 3:41 PM
3. This conforms with the desire of media/pundits to drive views and clicks, and agents to drive player transfers and thus their fees. There is no money to be made by the sports media or agents on internal improvements and academy/minor league success.
December 27, 2024 at 3:35 PM
2. The biggest issue is sports video games...particularly those built by EA Sports. Squad building in these vehicles is driven by player acquisition. For years, in version after version, there was very little a player could do to truly improve players in their squads, academies, or minor leagues.

1. The first issue is what I'm doing right now. 🤣 With its origins in sports talk radio, social media talk on sports frees fans to unload their emotions disguised as arguments. Owners and technical directors (GMs in the U.S.) are people too, and let those fan emotions inform their judgements.

I don't think it's meth...but definitely possible she's on gender affirming hormones therapy.

"They're going to have a hard time finding a majority of people to vote against their own interests..."

Oh well...its a nice thought.
