Clare reminds us that we should look at the suffering God who hangs from the Cross not in a passive manner but that we should "gaze, consider, contemplate" and "desire to imitate." This is a very demanding form of spirituality which, if taken seriously, demands everything that we can give. /4

She is also a theologian (arguably with a much more developed and eloquent theology than Francis's) whose writings inspired and influenced major scholastic writers such as Bonaventure. /3

Clare is the first woman in Christianity history to write a rule approved by the papacy, used by the order named after her from the 15th century onwards and up to today. She fought hard against bishops and popes for this approval, using everything and everyone she could to make this happen. /2

Happy Feast Day of St Clare of Assisi (d. 1253). Although often remembered by the title she gave herself "la pianticella" ("the little plant") of St Francis of Assisi, Clare is far more than just Francis's understudy. /1

... totally over 160,000 words. Each chapter is a major study, with many breaking new ground as well as giving an up-to-date account.

It was a pleasure to edit the Companion alongside Pablo Acosta-García and to work with a wonderful team of contributors (see contents page above). /2 (of 2)
