My new piece for @mondoweiss.net. Those who only recognize the genocide of the Palestinian people when they starve adopt a dehumanizing logic /n bsky.app/profile/harm...
harmscommitted.com
"Palestinian life remains bifurcated into these two categories—terrorist and victim—separating those who may be eradicated from those who should be protected, making starvation outrageous but the bombing of civilians insufficiently genocidal."

Why it took Palestinians starving for many to finally admit Israel is committing genocide in Gaza
Why has starvation been so crucial in getting some to finally admit Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, as compared to deadlier atrocities? The answer lies in the dehumanization of the Palestinian…

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

Is there a text of this “ceasefire” deal anyone has seen??
msjamshidi.bsky.social
Hard to believe the genocide is over - there have been ceasefires before all of which Israel has broken - and it will certainly continue thru the starvation and disease Israel has unleashed. But looks like there’s a ceasefire now

This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

We really need to retire "contrarian" as a descriptor for Weiss immediately.

The reason she is getting this job right now is because of her *non-contrarian* sensibilities.

She espouses views that the US's current power structure likes.

Is the irony of the president’s friend buying something called “the free press” and immediately installing a government truth compliance officer lost on everybody?

Breaking News: Paramount is buying The Free Press for $150 million and appointing Bari Weiss, the news site's co-founder, as the editor in chief of CBS News. nyti.ms/4gUnu5D

The only thing anyone needs to know about Bari Weiss is that she first came to national attention trying to get a Middle East Studies professor at Columbia fired for anti-Israel views, and yet somehow huge amounts of the US media elite think she is committed to "free speech" and "heterodoxy."

The NYT's Michael Grynbaum reported that this is the note that Bari Weiss sent to CBS News staffers this morning (1/2)

Weiss continued to hone her skills as a pro-Israel journalist and “activist” after graduation through stints at various neo-conservative and pro-Israel outlets mondoweiss.net/2018/03/isra...
msjamshidi.bsky.social
Her pro-Israel, anti-Palestinian perspective, which she came to college with, continued during and after university in a myriad of ways including through various stints in Israel proper, one of which involved doing a media fellowship mondoweiss.net/2018/03/isra...

Including the fact that the whole thing is styled as a reply to hate mail.....

On top of all this there's this entire section devoted to "Justice in the Trump Era" - he actually appended this to the end of his decision. Has any other judge ever done this? There's plenty not to like in the dicta - lots & lots of American exceptionalism - but the bulk of this is exceptional
msjamshidi.bsky.social
And the most important sentence of all (I don't know if any other judicial decision has ever said this, but it's long over due): "If 'terrorist' is interpreted to mean 'pro-Palestine' or 'anti-Israel' and 'support' encompasses pure political speech, then core free speech rights have been imperiled"
msjamshidi.bsky.social
"We . . . must not become, a nation that imprisons and deports people because we are afraid of what they have to tell us."
msjamshidi.bsky.social
"To us, masks are associated with cowardly desperados and the despised Ku Klux Klan"

"They [the govt] has done what they have repeatedly said they were doing: intentionally targeted political speech in order to stop campus protests"

Am reading Judge Young's decision in AAUP v. Rubio - a case about the government's ideological deportation policy against pro-Palestine non-citizens. There are just so many drop dead important lines. Here r a few: "ICE goes masked for a single reason -- to terrorize Americans into quiescence." /n

This decision will almost certainly be appealed but it is highly unlikely the Second Circuit will reverse this. The big question is the Supreme Court but I also can’t see it taking this up.
msjamshidi.bsky.social
This would have further crippled the UN’s work, which has already been crippled by the US withdrawal of significant funding.
msjamshidi.bsky.social
This decision is so important. A contrary conclusion would have been a major victory for the US, Israel, and their allies who hope to unravel the UN. To flout the well-established immunity rules would have exposed so many UN entities to suit in the US.
msjamshidi.bsky.social
In her opinion, the federal judge clearly and concisely demonstrated why the plaintiffs and the Trump admins are out of their mind and why UNRWA and the defendant UN officials are absolutely immune under intl law.
msjamshidi.bsky.social
Even though they all clearly are under intl law. The Trump admin intervened a few months ago supporting the plaintiffs position on immunity. It was bat shit crazy intervention. I wrote about it all here twailr.com/on-unrwas-im...
On UNRWA’s immunity
Maryam Jamshidi refutes the US government’s newfangled claim that UNRWA is not entitled to immunity from suit under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.
twailr.com
msjamshidi.bsky.social
The complaint laundered the false smear campaign that UNRWA = Hamas but the worst part was that plaintiffs real goal was to unravel the UN system itself by trying to convince the judge that UNRWA and certain UN officials were entitled to immunity from suit…
msjamshidi.bsky.social
So much has happened this week. And some of it was actually good. In Sept 30, a US federal judge dismissed a ludicrous claim against UNRWA and UN officials seeking to hold them responsible for Oct 7. /n
