I've always been a firm believer or looking what inspired your inspirations. Instead of just being inspired by Dark Souls, look at what inspired that team and try to gain more knowledge & appreciation

What I love about those games is their stories. Dark Cloud is a fairytale, it feels like an old work, say the Mabinogian, where interconnected stories weave a narrative that somewhat lacks complex characters but says a great deal.
