Smartest explanation I've heard about Venezuela: US wants to keep selling Venezuelan oil in petrodollars. The BRICS have been moving to put the oil market on "units", not dollars. So China would no longer help service our huge debt by purchasing our bonds to get dollars. The dollar would tank.
