#MentalHealth #MentalIllnessAwareness
Join MSU’s Mental Health Research Connect and NAMI Lansing for a special event during Mental Illness Awareness Week on October 9! The event will feature Dr. Vikram Patel, an internationally renowned expert on community-based approaches to mental health. The talk will be followed by a live panel discussion with a peer support specialist, a psychiatrist, and community activists. A green quote from Katy Thakkar that says: This event is about rethinking how we approach mental health— not just through services, but through relationships, community, and a sense of belonging. We’re thrilled to bring so many mental health experts, including the global voice of Dr. Patel, together to imagine what accessible, rights-based mental health support can look like in practice.

A new MSU study led by @chops310.bsky.social found that if you get better at handling daily stress, you become more extroverted, agreeable & open to new experience.

Likewise, the worse you manage daily stressors, the more introverted and unfriendly you become.

Researchers have given out over 10,000 postcards to the community over the last couple of years—postcards that highlight what resilience means to the transgender and non-binary community.

Read the full story (including a link to request your own postcards) here: psychology.msu.edu/news-events/...
A photo of five postcards with the text: What does resilience mean? Community connects with Transgender Resilience Postcard Project.

A photo of researcher Dr. Jae Puckett and a quote that says: “Resilience often implies bouncing back from challenges, but for this community, transphobia is constant and pervasive. It isn’t here one day and gone the next, so we wanted to center their voices to help redefine what resilience is when faced with these chronic stressors and particularly integrating a focus on gender experiences.”

A photo of five postcards. The text says: As the researchers started to analyze the interviews, they found inspiring metaphors about resilience. To help give these stories life, they partnered with Zeph Fishlyn, a queer visual artist, to transform the quotes into postcards, each telling a unique story of resilience.

A photo of one of the postcards. The text says: Since their creation, the postcards become much more than research artifacts—they're connections between people, offering hope and visibility during increasingly challenging times for trans and nonbinary communities.

Meet PSY academic advisor Andrew Murray!

Andrew knows firsthand what it’s like to adjust to a large school like MSU as a first-gen student from a small town. Now as an advisor, Andrew is dedicated to supporting students as they navigate their own paths at MSU.

A green graphic with this quote attributed to Andrew Murray: “There’s a deep, personal connection to the work I do; it’s not just a nine-to-five job where I punch the clock and answer emails. So much of why I’m here and why I do the work that I do has been because of my own personal experiences at Michigan State. There’s something truly special about East Lansing and MSU. I very much believe in the transformative nature of the MSU experience.”
