Sen. Daines is pushing a narrative designed to restrict abortion, stigmatize patients, and make access to care “unthinkable” in Montana. We refuse to let fear and political extremism determine the future of reproductive healthcare in our state. Montanans deserve real information and real autonomy.

Medication abortion is safe. It’s evidence-based care trusted by physicians, supported by major medical associations, and essential for Montanans, especially in rural communities where healthcare access is already limited.

His recent op-ed relies on a discredited study from an anti-abortion think tank (not decades of medical research, FDA safety reviews, or the lived experiences of millions of patients who have safely used mifepristone for more than 20 years)...

We stand with our neighbors in North Dakota, with the patients who deserve timely, compassionate care, with the providers facing criminalization for doing their jobs, and with every community fighting for the right to make decisions about their own bodies.

Montana knows what happens when extremists use courts and legislatures to chip away at constitutional rights. We’ve seen how quickly protections can erode and how misinformation fuels these attacks.

Even members of the Court acknowledged the ban is vague and confusing, leaving physicians unsure when care is legally allowed. When providers must choose between treating a patient and risking prison, healthcare becomes dangerous.

Under this law, providing an abortion is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Patients are exempt from prosecution, but their doctors are not.

This matters because:
• Many Native people receive their health care primarily or exclusively through IHS
• Access to non-IHS care may require traveling long distances, time off work, childcare, and fuel costs
• Delays in accessing abortion often increase medical risk and cost

Hyde prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion care, which means that Indian Health Services (IHS), a federal program created as part of treaty obligations, cannot cover abortion in most circumstances.

We honor that by continuing the work right here in Montana:
• Support trans youth and families
• Defend access to gender-affirming care
• Push back against misinformation
• Speak up when our neighbors are targeted
