I love the idea of the tax system incentivising worker-owned companies in some fashion. The path to wealth is owning productive assets. Spreading ownership helps with wealth inequality, and it also encourages employees to care about helping companies be more successful. Win/win!

Part of it is protectionism, but you can also look at it from a national security lens. You don't want your country to become heavily reliant on a foreign nation with whom you have some hostility. Like EU/Germany should have taken steps to become less reliant on Russian gas prior to the war in UKR
