Exactly. It was mostly him (and Belushi) creating this archetype in his head. You could trace the origins back to National Lampoon / Animal House / SNL / SCTV, which were basically all the same people.

Honestly, I think this trend was all Bill Murray. His characters in the 80s - Ghostbusters, Stripes, Meatballs - were mostly the same guy. Not super likable, but audiences wanted to be able to defy authority like that and not face any consequences. He wasn't the first, but he surely popularized it
