It was considered right, honorable and respectable for top law students to forgo a $215k/yr starting salary in Big Law to work for the DOJ for several years at a fraction of the salary. It meant the DOJ had some of the best litigators in the country. No way that remains true.

The Mayor of Union City, New Jersey (Brian Stack) still basically runs *his* town that way. He's not Latino but has been Mayor of the largely Cuban city since 2000 (and he's under 60).

An English degree is far more adaptable for your typical holder of an email job (which is like most white collar work) than learning CS only to have that field largely displaced by automation.
