Really looking forward to speaking at the 'Counting Chimneys - The Hearth Tax in Lincolnshire' conference on the 25th. Everyone is welcome, book in now! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/counting-c...
Picture shows a mud and stud smokehood exposed when the thatch was removed. It is made of timber and earth walling, but has been cut off below the ridge line. It originally served two fireplaces. The rafters and ridge-piece are much altered, but bits of the reed under-lining of the ceiling within survive

Me too - bad gateway error here too sadly

A photo of a row of apparently-brick cottages with thatched and wiggly-tin roofs. Actually a row of mud and stud cottages, with thatch under the wiggly-tin. A cobbled pavement in front of the cottages and a grey sky complete the picture

An absolutely pleasure to speak to Bracebridge Heath U3A today about mud and stud, and a delight to be speaking to Horncastle History & Heritage Society tomorrow evening - in the heart of Mud & Stud country!

Hmm, that's rubbish, we're further north in the county, but that shouldn't have made a difference. Apparently your phone needs to be Android 11 or iOS14.5 or later for it to work though

All 3 in our house went off simultaneously, we're all on O2 with fairly new phones though

Really enjoyed the first episode of @timeteam.bsky.social's latest excavation series - having really enjoyed volunteering as a test-pitter last year. Can't say I remember those finds though 😄. Next episode is out tomorrow...

I wish I had been able to go on a weekend like this when I was an undergraduate. If you've ever wondered about the houses of ordinary folk in history, or (if you know me) wondered what it is that I actually get up to, then book in and have an amazing weekend in Oxfordshire!

New to vernacular architecture and want to find out more? Why not come along to our training and study weekend at Sutton Courteney Abbey in Oxfordshire on 4-5 October 2025, and discover how we go about examining buildings? Further details at www.vag.org.uk/conferences.....

Mr P says that his choice would be 'Beware, for he is imbued with the power of Four ombudsmen'. Extra points if there are four relevant logos on it!

Absolutely devastated to learn today that Pete's Eats in Llanberis has gone the way of all things. It's been an (admittedly less frequent than I would like) part of my life forever, and now there's no point finishing the Welsh 2000s if I can't finish in Pete's Eats!

... Apologies, there are some expletives further down the thread, but to be fair they're fairly justified...

This is quite a story...

The secret German weather station on the Arctic island of Svalbard. Part of the 'Weather War'.

The team, led by Lieutenant Wilhelm Dege, were the last German troops to surrender in WW2, finally doing so FOUR MONTHS after Germany had officially surrendered.

It was not for want of trying. /1

As it is that time of year again, here is W/C L.E. Healy's wonderful response to the Air Ministry's reminder, hours into the landings in Normandy, that 2TAF's Hawker Typhoon Bomphoons were not cleared to drop 1000lbs bombs.

The Canadian Tiffys had already dropped 48 of them that morning...

#dday
LOOSE MINUTE,

To:- W/Odr. Ops. 7

You may consider the following to be of historical interest:-

At 10.30 hrs. today, an officer of the Air Ministry, Whitehall, telephoned to state that it was not yet possible for the Air Ministry to "clear” Typhoon aircraft for the carriage of 1,000 lb. bombs, and that the M.A.P. was being asked to carry out an investigation into the question.

As you are, no doubt, aware, we have for the past two months been fitting 1,000 lb. bomb racks to Typhoon aircraft; and the Typhoon carrying 2 x 1000 lb. bombs is our primary weapon against certain tactical targets.

It was suggested to the Air Ministry official concerned that he might like to take the following action:-

(i) Try to stop A.E.A.F. from putting 1,000 lb. bombs onto Typhoons.
(ii) Recover any 1,000 lb. bombs which may already have been dropped by Typhoons, and explain to the recipients that the bombs were dropped in error.

...and our CDT teacher, who happened to be Mr Bailey, built us one later in the year for charity week, and the fire brigade came and pumped water under it for all the kids to cross to get into school.

Absolutely, I seem to remember walking around the bypass from Whyke to go and see them - walking on the dual carriageway was weird! I was at secondary school at the time...

I remember them in Chichester in the 1990s when the city flooded and they were basically the only thing that saved our house...

Really sad to hear this news - the Ponies are one of a kind, and their arrangements are really creative and distinctive, so there is no way this is just creative coincidence.

You should come and try Lincolnshire next 😊

Absolutely loving @skinnylister.bsky.social 's new album Songs From The Yonder, and the latest Pieces of Eight from @thelongestjohns.bsky.social - 2025 is a good year for folk music, who else should I be listening to?

Very much looking forward to speaking to Grantham Local History Society on Monday evening. I'll be talking about all things Mud and Stud at Grantham Museum at 7.30pm,and would love to see you there!
A photo of an ochre-daubed, single storey mud and stud cottage in Hacconby, with the front door flanked by windows and two raking dormer windows above. It is surrounded by bushes and has a pan-tiled roof. It is a very attractive cottage!

Sorry to hear that - hope all is well for you all. We weren't going to make it this evening as it happens, so hopefully we now won't miss the fun!
