I haven't had any DMs, but I've seen they pop up more when I like or reply to bigger accounts. Had a few impersonators as well unfortunately. So its probably a similar system to what they do on Twitter

I only made my account today, but interaction definitely seems lower from what I have seen and people aren't posting as much or the same things from other sites. Hopefully this doesn't slow down too much as I've enjoyed being on it so far.
