I also interrogate how urbanization is framed in relation to commoning and in critical urban studies more generally. Advancing planetary urbanization debates through negative dialectics, the paper urges renewed attention to centrality as a force shaping the urban condition within and beyond cities.

The paper considers the spatial conditions of possibility for this emergent urban logic, examining the material/propietary configurations, socioecological dynamics and centrality arrangements that distingish capitalist and 'commonist' regimes.

It discusses the notion of commonist urbanization, a spatial force aimed at the reproduction of the common rather than capital. Rejecting defensive tactics, commonism is framed as a totalizing principle spanning multiple scales. (Link below)

New book on the history of peripheral centralities and suburban utopias/failures, ed. by Nick Phelps, @rkeil.bsky.social & @planographer.bsky.social.

Our chapter uses Lefebvre's notion of centrality to examine Madrid's informal settlements and their impact on urban policy under a Fascist regime.
