I grew up in Asheville, NC, home of George Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate, which I visited often. I think the Uber rich of that era were either idealistically indebted to their fellow Americans, or a bit afraid of the rest of us, or both. Whichever, it inspired some philanthropy for sure!
