Minhwa was characterized as connected to the lives of the Korean people and embodying the Korean sentiment. These paintings and folk characters were actually quite political, the Tiger would represent the ridiculous and foolish aristocrats while the Magpie represented the wise and witty common folk.

These were paintings done by mostly anonymous craftsmen without formal training, who would often, in their paintings, retell the same folk art, passed along through tradition, by their own brush and in their own interpretation.

Derpy and Sussie inspired by the traditional Korean painting “genre” of “Kkachi Horangi” or “JakHodo” (translating to Magpie and Tiger) or usually titled, the“Idiot Tiger and Scolding Magpie” in the Korean painting style of “Minhwa” or “Painting of the people.”
