I made an animated version of this too, might post also.
"Clippit" (or, "Clippy") the paperclip from Microsoft Word is looking at you cheerfully. He is a paperclip with two big eyes on top of a piece of yellow notebook paper. He says, "It looks like you're experiencing systemic oppression. Have you tried making different personal choices?"

A Charlie Baron Sukkot

This comic is based on a friend's COVID sukkah building experience. He had very little to work with, and when he posted a photo, people said it looked like "Charlie Brown's sukkah." A kind rabbi reassured him, and I used his comment in the speech near the end.
A Charlie Baron Sukkot by Emily K.

A very simple entry to a sukkah is shown - two sticks on either side, and branches make a flat roof at the top. Fruits hang off of it. A lulav and etrog are below. The whole comic is done in the style of Schulz/Melendez's "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Kids are playing in the fallen leaves. Two little boys, one with reddish hair and kippah, and another with a shock of blond hair, sit at a brick wall. The redhead holds a tallis as a security blanket as he sucks his thumb.

"Yom Kippur is over now, and Sukkot is arriving. I should feel happy, but I feel run-down. I know I should be celebrating, but I just don't feel excited." The redheaded boy replies, "Only you could take a wonderful thing like sukkot and turn it into a problem. Maybe Libby's right. Of all the Charlie Baron's in the world, you're the Charlie Baron-est." He walks away. Charlie walks towards a red make-shift booth that says "Therapeutic Help 25 cents, The therapist is Very In." A girl with curly black hair sits at it. Charlie says, "My trouble is Sukkot. Instead of feeling happy, I feel anxious. What if I mess something up? What if, in feeling anxious, I don't fulfill the mitzvah of celebrating?" She responds, "How 'bout getting a sukkah kit for us to build? That would be a mitzvah." "Me? Are you sure?" "Sure, Charlie Baron. We need a Sukkah. You need a Mitzvah." He then walks away, but sees something that stuns him. Charlie walks towards his dog's doghouse, and sees his dog decorating a very lush sukkah against it. The dog is a tri-colored beagle with brown fur, white paws, a white snout and belly, and black spots. "Good Grief." Then a friend shouts. "Over here, Charlie Baron!" It's Libby. She says, "I think we should have a Sukkahspiel tomorrow night." Charlie is taken aback. "A 'Sukkahspeil?!'" "Yes, a glamorous play in our glamorous sukkah!" "But that's for Purim!" Libby says, "and I can play the Shabbat Queen." Charlie: "It won't even be Shabbat." "Charlie Baron, you just need to get in a festive mood. Why don't you go get our sukkah?" He walks with the redheaded kid in the kippah, who says "Let's try over there." They find themselves in a big lot with allsorts of fancy lushly decorated sukkahs. "I dunno, Levi. None of these Sukkahs feel right."

"No Greater Mitzvah"

This work is a stylized map of Gaza, under siege and blockade by Israel and Egypt for almost 2 decades. The title refers to Maimonides’ insistence that “there is no greater mitzvah than the redemption of captives.” More in alt text.
A map of Gaza made up of various styles of Hebrew text. Around the border of the piece is the English translation of the Hebrew. On the bottom right is my signature, in the form of olive branches. The text is in blue, green, red, and black.
--

Maimonides states “there is no greater mitzvah than the redemption of captives.” And who are the captives? They are the Palestinians in Gaza, held hostage by foreign powers and by their own government, who has not had elections since they came to power. They’re held hostage by an Israeli government that has empowered that government holding them hostage and has not tried to redeem them. Then there are the Israeli civilian hostages taken into Gaza by terrorists. The blue letters in the main territory represent each of those people, with the letters taken from their names. The calligraphic representations of the name of God (YHVH is not here) are also blue, to represent anyone else not accounted for. The colors come from both the Palestine and Israel flags.

In black are the borders of the blockade. In red, the translations of the verses calling for the redemption of captives. In the cursive writing is the verse of Amos, “let justice well up like waters.”

The only just end to this war is a redemption of both Israeli AND Palestinian captives. Put redemption is as intertwined as the letters making up the territory. There is no peace for either of us until there is peace for both of us. Closeup of the print, showing in greater detail my signature. It is made of olive branches and says "Seek not vengeance and bear no grudges - love peace and pursue peace," in Hebrew and English. It is in green and blue. Red text is around the edge: "Do not harden your heart or close your hand, do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor, One shall not oppress them with exhausting work in your presence." Close up of the blue and green Hebrew text that makes up the land of Gaza. Around it, stylized like barbed wire, is additional Hebrew text. Part of the sea blockade border can be seen, in block Hebrew. Red English text cuts through it.

It's often been stated that Trump advisor Stephen Miller looks as hateful as he sounds. When I read his statements about immigrants and migrants - "they are invaders, American will be victorious over them," and some-such - I go think back to Goebbels, the propaganda minister of Nazi Germany.
Stephen Miller and Joseph Goebbels in a dual portrait in the style of a rough pen drawing. They share a mouth and an eye, as their faces overlap on one side. Their expressions are the same, as their hate comes from the same place and targets the most vulnerable. This is the same drawing as the previous drawing, but in a scratchboard style, as if scratching away the white of the image from a black background. A dual portrait of Joseph Goebbels and Stephen Miller, in the style of a rough pen drawing. Both have a sneer on their face that looks like they only feel joy when they witness others feel pain. Here, Miller and Goebbels share an eye and their mouths connect. They share the same evil dead-eyed smile because their joy comes from the same evil place.

Zionism: Who is it? What is it? Why is it? 2/2
Revisionist Zionism - ציונות רוויזיוניסטית

Top right image: Portrait of Ze'ev Jabotinsky. Bottom left: Women paramilitary soldiers holding rifles. To their right is a propaganda posture of "Greater Israel" that says "The Sole Solution!" with a fist holding a rifle overtop.

Text: Revisionist Zionism promoted expansionism and the establishment of a Jewish majority on both sides of the Jordan River. It was the primary ideological opponent of the dominant labor Zionism.

In the 1920s, Jewish military leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky advocated a "Revision” of the practical zionism of Herzl and Ben-Gurion, with a primary focus on removing limits on Jewish immigration to Palestine and expanding territorial control over all of British Palestine and Transjordan.
Even as European antisemitism skyrocketed with the rise of nazi germany, the British restricted Jewish immigration in order to quell unrest among the majority arab population. In response, the revisionist paramilitary group Irgun carried out attacks
On Arab residents and the occupying British government. Military force was seen as the surest way to establish a Jewish state.
Jabotinsky himself opposed communism and saw private property ownership as a means of liberation. He viewed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini favorably until Italy allied with Nazi Germany. As such, some left-wing Zionists labeled him a fascist.
Later iterations of revisionist zionism moderated their stance on territorial maximalism.

Irgun leader and future Prime Minister
Menachem Begin went on to help found the right-wing party Likud, which has been a prominent political force in the Israeli government for decades. Religious Zionism - ציונות דתית

image: Meir Kahane yelling and holding up his fist. Bottom left: Ultra Orthodox Jewish settlers carry rifles and patrol the West Bank.

Text: According to Jewish religious texts, only
the Messiah can bring about the return to
Israel. Zionism was a secular movement,
Considered blasphemous.
In the 1920s, rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook
Made a case that Jewish law and Zionism
Could work in tandem -- encouraging
religious Jews to sanctify the land and
bring secular Jews closer to Torah. After Kook’s death, his son Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook took the movement in an ultra-nationalist, ethnosupremacist direction.

In the 1970s, religious zionist and Jewish terrorist Rabbi Meir
Kahane founded the Kach political party. He was arrested
dozens of times for planning violent attacks against Palestinians.
While in jail in 1980, he wrote the book "They Must Go: How Long
Can Israel Survive Its Malignant and growing arab population?"
-
Armed religious zionist Settlers often commit acts of violence against Their Arab neighbors. They build homes illegally on Palestinian land in the West Bank, despite local and international opposition - while the Israeli military does little to stop them. Once considered fringe, far-right Jewish supremacist political
parties gained power and influence in Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu's government. There they play a key role in entrenching
Israel's continued occupation of Palestine. Christian Zionism

Images: Messianic Jews blowing shofars in front of a banner that says "Yeshua HaMashiach." Marchers behind a banner that says "Christians United For Israel." Pastor John Hagee, incorrectly wearing a Tallit.

Text: Most christian zionists today are U.S.
Evangelicals, whose support for Israel at all costs stems from a desire to hasten the end of days. They see the
“Gathering of Israel" as a prophetic necessity. Even as they declare Israel
"Belongs only to god's chosen people," Jews only play the pawn for them, as in the end they will either convert to Christianity or be killed. This type of zionism hopes for a future Israel with no Jewish presence.
In the United States, there are more christian zionists than there are Jewish people, and they carry far more sway in the government's policies toward Israel. U.S. Jews are disproportionately left-leaning and critical of Israel’s actions.
Christian zionists are nearly all right-wing conservatives, and they support illegal Jewish settlements and the expulsion of Palestinians.
However, Jewish and Israeli institutions have tolerated them in exchange for access to power and influence.

"I'm not antisemitic, I support Israel!" say christian zionists, even as they appropriate Jewish ritual items for use in church services, where they declare that "Unsaved" Jews are destined for hell. John Hagee, head of Christians United for Israel, said hitler was sent by god in order to hasten the founding of the Jewish state. Jewish lives - and deaths - are merely their tools. Images: olive trees in a simple landscape. Closeup of an olive branch.

Text: Zionism is more complex and more varied than any one slogan, headline, or soundbite can encompass. While not representative of Judaism or the Jewish people, its principles are interwoven with Jewish culture and history.
The way that Jewish people relate to Zionism is just as varied and complex. Most Jews were uninterested in it or even opposed it until after the full knowledge of the Holocaust set in. The realization that in only a few years, one-third of the world's Jewish population had been incinerated -- to the overall indifference of their gentile neighbors -- renewed an interest in Jewish national autonomy and self-determination.
The unique nature of Jewish identity and the tumultuous, rich history of the land itself defies the neat narrative of Zionism being a foreign white colonial power subjugating non-white natives, in which one side is "Oppressor" and the other "Oppressed." Like other political and social movements, its goals are at once lofty and problematic.
The Zionist national anthem is "Hatikvah" - "The Hope."

Zionism: Who is it? What is it? Why is it?

A VERY cursory look at the history of the Jewish Political Movement.

1/2
Cover Page. Title: "ZIONISM" - ציונות - What is it? Who is it? Why is it? by Emily K. At the top is a basic skyline of an Israeli city. A black and white drawing of Theodor Herzl, who is a brooding man with black hair and a long black beard, leaning over a bridge with his hands clasped. A longing for the "Return to the land of Israel" has been a part of Judaism since the destruction of the first temple in ancient Jerusalem. Despite exile, the Jewish people have had a small but constant presence in the Levant for thousands of years - nearly always as colonized second-class citizens.
Through ancient and medieval times, Jews were mainly subjected to cultural and religious prejudice by their
non-Jewish neighbors and rulers. By the 15th century, it was racial prejudice. Spanish Inquisition "Limpieza de sangre (clean blood)"
Laws singled out Jews who converted to Christianity.
16th century German theologian Martin Luther
Declared jewish lineage itself to be "Filth." By the 19th century, Jews were not simply "Of Semitic origin," but
mixed with other non-white races. Its purportedly inherited traits included greed, cunning, and a large hooked nose.
The 19th and 20th centuries were marked by a resistance to imperial power by way of self-governed nation-states. Arab nationalists opposed the Ottoman and British empires, Hungarian nationalists opposed the Austrian Empire, Ukrainians opposed the Tsar and the Habsburgs, and so forth.
Yet despite generations of residence and assimilation, Jews were foreigners in these new nations -- on Soviet passports, the
"Nationality" listed for Russian Jews was not "Russian," but
"Jewish." It was during this era that zionism emerged - from the Hebrew word "Zion," a biblical name for Jerusalem. Political Zionism - ציונות מדינית

Images: A portrait of Theodor Herzl flanked by his books "Altneuland" and "Der Judenstaat." On the bottom left is an image of laborers and camels working to build Tel Aviv c. 1920 in the Mandate of Palestine.

The earliest Zionists were organized by Jewish Hungarian writer Theodor Herzl in the late 19th century. The first world Zionist congress in 1897 marked a strategic shift: at first an ardent promoter of Jewish assimilation, Herzl realized European antisemitism could only be avoided, never appeased. The new aim was to secure legal and public sanction for a Jewish state by building relationships with world powers who had a presence in Palestine. Herzl's book "The Jewish State" and novel
"Old New Land" (in Hebrew, "Tel Aviv“), laid out his vision: skilled Jewish immigrants would work alongside native arabs to build up a progressive, modern haven for all nations. Judaism could be practiced freely, but he opposed privileging Jews.

Herzl held prejudice against unassimilated jewry and naiveté about Palestinian Arab cooperation with new Jewish settlers.
Uganda and Argentina were considered for settlement, but those were vehemently rejected. Herzl died before seeing the founding of the city of Tel Aviv in 1909 - named for his book.

The first land for Tel Aviv was purchased by Jacobus Kanna, who hid his Jewish identity from the Ottomans. Architect Akiva Aryeh Weiss envisioned a "Hebrew urban centre in a
healthy environment, planned according to the rules of aesthetics and modern hygiene." Labor Zionism - תנועת העבודה

Images: Top right - 3 farm workers with tools marching onward. Middle: The logo for the Histadrut, the General Organization of Workers in Israel. Bottom right: Portraits of David Ben Gurion and Golda Meir.

Labor Zionism arose among socialist Russian Jews in the early 20th century who sought to escape ever-present pogroms.
Settling in British Palestine, they established kibbutzim (collective farms) and defied the popular image of the Jew as a cosmopolitan intellectual -- and dismissed Herzl's Zionism as bourgeoisie.

Labor zionists criticized earlier zionists' use of low-paid Arab workers, which they believed would lead to a colonial society built on the backs of exploited unorganized labor. Motives were obviously also self-serving - a push was made to only hire Jews, who badly needed the work.
Multiple party splits occurred, with far-left factions retaining Marxist and Communist principles, and right-wing factions moderating economically.
Labor zionism formed the backbone of what would become Israel’s dominant
Left-wing political parties, and included future prime ministers David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir. The Labor government was a major part of the Oslo Peace Accords and remains supportive of the creation of a Palestinian state.

This is a parody of an IWW anti-KKK poster made at the hate group's height in the 1920s. Today's occupying Federal forces are an outgrowth of the KKK and other white supremacist groups.

One emulates the antique paper look of the original, the other is black and white to be printed out and posted.
A poster with black lettering and imagery on a beige background. At the top it says "Protect Yourself From This Menace" in large bold type. Below is a black square with reverse beige letters that say: "The DHS and ICE are anti-law, anti-order, anti-justice, anti-freedom and anti-America." In the square on the left, in the same coloring, is a cartoon of an ICE officer in full tactical gear with a rifle, wearing a mask of course. Below the square in bold type is "DO NOT OBEY IN ADVANCE!"

The IWW was forward-thinking in that they were one of the only unions to actively organize across race, ethnicity, resident status, and religion. This is the same image as the previous one, but in black with a white background instead of beige.

Another illustration combining IWW sabotage propaganda posters with the sub sandwich attack.

It was an easy decision to put a sub sandwich in the "Sabo-Tabby"s mouth. Maybe the cat was just stealing it after it got hurled at the occupying ICE officer, who knows.
A vertical poster that says "Beware" in all black capital letters at the top, with "Liberty or Occupation" in smaller letters below it. Then a black cat with an arched back, extended claws, and puffy tail looks menacingly at the viewer. It has a sub sandwich in its mouth. A red circle is behind it as a backdrop. Below it are the words, "We Never Forget" in red. Below in large black letters is "SUBOTAGE." This poster is the same as the first one, but in black and white.

A man threw a sub sandwich (or, a hoagie, if you're from my neck of the woods) at the occupying military forces in D.C. He was charged with a felony, becoming a folk hero and symbol of resistance against the administration's overreach. I made this I.W.W. poster parody as an homage. More in the alt.
A red and black print-like image on a beige background. An ICE officer is being crushed underneath a giant sub sandwich. The sun in the sky is a fist with the words "Do not obey in advance" around it. The Washington DC skyline can be seen in black against a red sky. In off-white large letters is the word "SUB-OTAGE." Below in an off-white square is the text: "Sub-otage is when a hero bites back, jams up or clubs off the fangs of Fascism — B.L.T. Haywood."

Acts like this - disruptive, low-stakes, often comedic - are an important part of the sabotage of authoritarianism. The IWW union would post "silent agitators" to spread their message. This illustration is a parody of one such poster, which advocates "sabotage" in the form of a wooden shoe crushing a capitalist. The quote is by William "Bill" Haywood, the founder of IWW. He is a controversial figure, to say the least, but his ideas about spreading the message are still in use today in the form of wheat paste posters and stickers.

A group of corgis wearing bandanas with an anti-monarchy symbol on them gather around a table in a basement to strategize. A map of England is on the table, with other documents. Behind them on the wall is an anti-monarchy flag and a portrait of another corgi. There are also dog treats and a filing cabinet.

The lead corgi, wearing a black cap, is speaking to them. "Just spoke to our man on the inside. The time to move is NOW."

Below, "For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent." Next to that is a chart labeled "Business Graph" with a line that goes up, then sharply plummets. It says "Line go down." "For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury." Two soldiers from the CECOT mega-prison roughly frog-walk a man with a shaved head in shackles. "For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences." Kristy Noem stands in front of jailed CECOT prisoners. Her had says "Junior Sheriff."
