My pal @thelrm.bsky.social reading from her wonderful new book at Housman's. I may know her but I'd truly recommend it to all interested in walking freely and creatively in towns/cities; her personal stories are beautifully and compellingly interwoven w/ her and others' views, research and theories.
Morag, in black patterned dress and with magenta hair, reading from her paperback book into a black microphone to an audience on the floor of Housman's bookshop. The cover of the book, with an urban skyline down the left edge and a rural one down the right, and the title 'The Feminist Art Of Walking, Morag Rose', down the middle over a pinkish sky.

No no no no no! Passed these on the way home from Derbyshire last month, they were stunning, and their form resonates with so many of us (pun unintended).

💥12 months ago Britain's last coal-fired power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire, shut down after 50 years powering the national grid. We can now confirm that C20's listing application for Ratcliffe's 8 cooling towers has been rejected by DCMS, while their demolition has been approved.

Ooh, and Trafford!

Sorry, pathetic City fan joke that I've absorbed, despite not really caring.

I've just received next year's Emma Bridgewater pocket diary, themed around colour - you might like it!

I'm sad the exhibition will be gone when I come down in late Nov.
The cover of the diary, with circles of the different colours used by the pottery firm. The title pages for July, with 15 circles of deep Lion Yellow on the left hand page.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

The Ozzy and Sharon doc seemed to start badly but ended up being so sad. They must all be devastated but especially her - though she was clearly so glad that he fulfilled his wishes.

Theatre of Hate have a great sound. I wish I could have enjoyed it more but the heat and my apparent feebleness ATM, when combined with intense, repetitive rhythms, meant I couldn't go the distance. Still. 😔

Good set from Skeletal Family, in support of Theatre of Hate at the Garage. Pounding drums, spidering guitar and ethereal vocals all present and correct.
Dimly-lit shot of the band on stage, female singer in a monochrome dress in the spotlight, surrounded by male guitarist, bassist and drummer under blue lights. Backs of crowd's heads silhouetted in front.

Ooh ta, I've got a few bits of that dotted about - like everything, growing in number!

I feel exactly the same - I adore BH and would hate to lose it, but just think what that money would represent in other fields.

Very sad news, I loved her book uncovering the history of little house near The Globe, The House On The Thames. Her forthcoming novel, very appropriately published by Spitalfields Life, sounds fantastic.

It is with a heart full of emotion that I have to announce that my good friend the historian GILLIAN TINDALL died on Wednesday aged 86. In February, Gillian asked me to publish her final work, JOURNAL OF A MAN UNKNOWN, which comes out on 6th November. spitalfieldslife.bigcartel.com

Yeah, but I think that's because we have this convention of singing in American accents! Which he seems to have been sucked into, but I guess it's hard to croon in broad Yorkshire!
musicandmuseums.bsky.social
Also we only have one 'u' sound where southern English accents have two, so it's normal int'narth t'seh belleh bUtton. Love us, love our accents - as we in turn love - sorry, luv - all southerners.

@stevemurphy.bsky.social No reason why you'd
know but explosive plosives like K at the end of bike-h are part of a lot of northern accents - I'm Manc and had no idea it was a thing until I studied linguistics. It was ~ sneered at and I stopped doing it, and now I really notice that my husband does!

Suck It And See is a slogan from an advert - Fisherman's Friends originally I think, which are kind of so borderline horrible they're nice (like olives), and then later apparently rehashed by Andrew's Antacids with a slight tweak to 'them'.

Written 55 years ago, Schulz's heartfelt clarity cuts through the noise, even today.

Scan of a typed letter from 1970, from Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, addressed to "Joel Lipton, 622 N. Foothill Road, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90210"

It reads:

"Dear Joel:

I think it is more difficult these days to define what makes a good citizen than it has ever been before. Certainly all any of us can do is follow our own conscience and retain faith in our democracy. Sometimes it is the very people who cry out the loudest in favor of getting back to what they call "American Virtues" who lack this faith in our country.

I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities.

Sincerely yours,

Charles M. Schulz"

It goes without saying but love and solidarity to Jewish people in Manchester, very very upsetting news which I only saw late today.
