The album acts as a companion to her 2001 album, “Vespertine”, which was about falling in love with her partner over a decade prior. “Vulnicura”, meanwhile, is about falling out of love, and the anger, despair and pain that comes with the ending of her partnership and an impactful part of her life.

This composition is divided into eleven sections referred to as “pulses”, with each focusing on one of eleven chords. The strings, metallophones, pianos, marimbas, xylophones, and vocals all provide melodic and harmonic loops that are geometric and meditative.
