Vidja game maker (He/Him)

Mostly just goofing around with NES assembly (very slowly) and taking in retro gaming history. Work in Solar2D and Unity for other current projects.

I've mentioned it a few times, but it keeps tripping me up how much planning needs to happen before I can code anything for the NES. Trying to have a random battle layout? Better have all those data structures, attribute table boundaries, and pattern table layout planned well in advance.

Found myself watching Action Button Reviews Tokimeki Memorial again this week. They're probably 2 parts performance piece one part review, but I 100% love them.

Something modern game making hadn't prepared me for with NES games is the amount of planning and compression that needs to be thought out before you can put anything on screen. I've made more google sheets with this silly rpg than the rest of my games combined.

The 6502 CPU first went on sale 50 years ago today. Here's the story of how young Steve Wozniak ended up buying his out of a jar in a hotel room, which he used in the first Apple I computer. #retrocomputing dfarq.homeip.net/the-6502-cpu...

The lost source code convo reminded me of a little story about FFX, or how I ended up in the thanks for the remaster.
In the 2000s, I made a FFX & FFX-2 Model and animation viewer. The thing kinda exploded on the neogaf forum as I recall. It was my first work around PS2 reverse engineering.

I'm not buying that the 1001 PS1s sound better than other models. Couldn't tell the difference between it and a 7001. Tried a few games and a PUP CD. Composite out and multi AV.

On the plus side, it did remind me that PUP has a great video game themed music video

A lesson learned messing around with an asm NES game is how delayed the gratification is. Something I take for granted in modern game images.

I thrust my fists in the air after finally getting a compressed enemy character set to dynamically loaded where I wanted. But this pic is hard to show off :D

One nifty feature of my custom sound driver that I gloss over on here is the concept of variants. Each stage has "normal", "cave" and "pause" versions of the music, and I can hop between them at phrase boundaries.

Also shown: a fancy new RTA timer for speedruns :D #nes #gamedev #screenshotsunday

Happy pride folks

I'm still fleshing out the entries, but here's a list of over 200 retro games (pre-2010) which were made by trans people or which had trans people on the dev team.

We have always been here.

I just saw this crazy WIP of a #NES #hombrew project that is pushing 3D vector graphics not unlike the ones they used in the NES port of Elite.

This is super impressive to see running so smoothly on the old 8-bit system.

I started work on the End Credits for Super Sunny World (my NES platformer).

It's a mess to look at now, but there's cool stuff going on: multi-layered parallax scrolling as well as vertical and horizontal scrolling mixed together!

Posting now for comparisons later!

So, I don't think any of this is mean spirited, but I do take some exception with the term "broken". Kinda wish we moved to "exploited" or a similar term as a community. It pokes at a game for not being perfectly hardened in a way that nobody would actually want in terms of release dates and costs.
