But in modern regulations have pretty much wiped out that ‘yakuza’ presence, and those old-school scenes have all but disappeared. Now it just feels like a fantasy from another era.
You could say it’s part of the price we paid for going fully digital and ‘clean.🙄

I totally get that. The world of underground mahjong depicted in manga like Tetsuya and Kaiji — those smoky backrooms with deep yakuza connections — was incredibly dramatic and romantic in its own dark way.

In Japan lately, elementary school kids are learning mahjong at real tables—completely breaking from the old, shady Showa-era image. It’s now viewed as a clean, logical mind sport. This is a hugely positive change, and I’m really excited for the future!

Sorry for going on so long—

Personally, in digital mahjong, waifus are totally optional for me—they're fine with or without—but I do think they've overall boosted the total player base. If devs got proactive about adding more attractive male characters, it could even draw in more female players.

Both are irreversible mind games.
Fighting games require lightning reflexes, so younger players have the edge.
Mahjong is slow and deliberate, so you can still crush it even when you’re old 😁

I read Perry's note — wow, the passion really comes through! You can genuinely feel how much he loves this stuff.
To put it bluntly (sorry if this sounds reductive), it’s like:
“Fighting games are decided frame by frame, mahjong is decided one tile at a time.”

After all, when you can play free online mahjong (like JanSoul or Mahjong Ichibangai) anytime at home, most people probably figured nobody would bother going all the way to an arcade and paying real money to play.
I still find it absolutely fascinating that so many people actually do.

That said, on top of the base play fee, they also charge for character gacha and cut-in gacha, so those microtransactions are probably propping up the numbers a lot.
If there were a decent free online mahjong option, I’d just play that at home too.

As a market, arcade mahjong games like MFG are quite unique and actually perform really well in terms of revenue (source: a Tokyo game center owner’s blog)

Yeah, Users have mixed feelings about the new character's traits, but KONAMI keeps pushing the envelope. When the next official survey rolls around, I'm gonna lobby for an international server for MFG.

Can’t really blame Konami though — they’re clearly trying to avoid “just another safe update” and going full weird-mode these days.
Keep cooking, KONAMI 👍
