Also, murakami’s vivid description of 70s Japan heightened the reading experience for me. It’s nice to see that this was an early work of his and where his other works eventually go after this one. 4/5 stars ✨

Morrison is illustrating that life can still exist during and after an apocalypse, regardless of whether the remaining living things, humans and flora/fauna included, survive in whole or in parts. ✨

In this passage we’re experiencing several apocalypses simultaneously. From the history of the island to several apocalypses happening at the same time.

She continues to explain the history of this island to show that prior to the winter homes existing, the first apocalypse was the environment that was tilled to make way for plantations and the other apocalypse is when the natives were killed and the enslaved population was imported from Haiti.

But with every “apocalypse” is an opportunity to change how that apocalypse looks. Morrison starts the novel in explaining the apocalypse of the island, Isle De Chevaliers (island of horses; 4 horsemen reference from the book of revelations), which is illustrated by the rows of winter homes.
