One of the best ways to diet is not to eat while watching TV a.k.a. holding your phone on the toilet.

Turn a map of Antarctica up anyway you like. I recommend the longitude that takes the shortest route home.

Today I learnt beluga and narwhals can have babies together. Not to be confused with “they should have babies together”

The creation of common names for all parts of nature is probably
the biggest low-cost change that environmentalists could implement.

What fate overtakes each wave as it breaks against the land? I
began to count, waiting for the seventh wave. How are we to know
which is the first and which the seventh?
How can we rationalise and
set to numbers pulsations of water that have been world without
end?

Why aren’t mosquito net burkas a thing? My wife always gets terribly bitten whenever we’re outside but if she was wearing one of these, wouldn’t that solve the problem?

The INNER edge of the Oort Cloud is estimated to begin around 2,000–5,000 AU. So it will take until around 10,000–20,000 years from now, that these probes (2 Voyagers, 2 Pioneers, New Horizons will truly enter the denser outer Oort Cloud.

Our only probes with solar escape velocity estimated positions by 2050:
•Voyager 1: ~27,000 million km (~180 AU) from the Sun
•Voyager 2: ~22,000 million km (~145 AU)
•Pioneer 10: ~25,000 million km (~167 AU)
•Pioneer 11: ~20,000 million km (~133 AU)
•New Horizons: ~10,000 million km (~67 AU)

within the 2020 lockdowns birdsongs regained lost qualities.
The white-crowned sparrows, for instance, extended their songs back down into lower frequencies which would normally be drowned out, and their songs became richer, fuller and more complex. It turned out that, the birds had been ‘shouting’.

An owl’s hearing does not decline with age because, like many other birds but unlike humans, the sensitive hair cells of the inner ear regenerate continuously.

My favourite ESL neologism in my family:

Hectangle - a 6 sided shape. But it could also describe the mess we are in in polite company.

Shifting baseline syndrome has been a feature in two books I’ve just read.
One of the personal measures is just the difference between windscreens bugs in the 70s and now. It would be interesting if we had ‘preserved’ windshields from junkyards that we could do an eDNA sampling sequence.

I realised today that New Zealand glow worms are larvae of flies specifically fungus gnats and therefore maggots. Being maggots we could also call New Zealand glow worms “Star maggots.”
