This image, courtesy of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), captures the glow of distant stars within NGC 5264, a dwarf galaxy located just over 15 million light-years away in the constellation of Hydra (The Sea Serpent). Dwarf galaxies like NGC 5264 typically possess around a billion stars — just 1 percent of the number of stars found within the Milky Way. They are usually found orbiting other larger galaxies such as our own, and are thought to form from the material left over from the messy formation of their larger cosmic relatives. NGC 5264 clearly possesses an irregular shape — unlike the more common spiral or elliptical galaxies — with knots of blue star formation. Astronomers believe that this is due to the gravitational interactions between NGC 5264 and other galaxies nearby. This colour enhanced image shows the real colours of the Moon, predominantly the lunar maria. The maria were formed by ancient basaltic flood volcanic eruptions that once covered low lying regions in a thick, nearly flat layer of solidified magma. The image is a mosaic of 24 panels taken with the ToUCam's 640x480 resolution. Each panel is a stack of 500 1/1000s frames, which provided for very low noise levels. The result was then heavily colour saturated and a copy of the original image was added as luminosity layer. The result is a lunar mineral map which clearly shows the distribution of titanium minerals on the lunar surface. Mare basalts are generally grouped into three series based on their major element chemistry: high-Ti basalts, low-Ti basalts, and very Low-Ti basalts. While these groups were once thought to be distinct based on the Apollo samples, global remote sensing data from the Clementine mission now shows that there is a continuum of titanium concentrations between these end members, and that the high-titanium concentrations are the least abundant. TiO2 abundances can reach up to 15 wt% for mare basalts, whereas most terrestrial basalts have abundances much less than 4 wt%.

This image shows the core region of the Rho Ophiuchi Complex, centered around the prominent blue reflection nebula IC 4603. This is one of the nearest star forming regions and the intricacies of the dense interstellar dust clouds in the area provide a spectacular display of light and shade; the contrasting hues making this one of the most dramatic and colourful patches of the entire night sky. Even the brightest parts of this dusty nebulousity is barely noticeable when viewed through large amateur telescopes. This deep exposure brings out the full splendour of the scene and shows the delicately swirling clouds like an expressionist painting on a giant interstellar canvas. The bright star is 7.9 magnitude SAO184376 which is the main source of light for the blue reflection nebula. The contrasting red areas are primarily illuminated by the red supergiant star Antares, which lies just outside the field of view. Antares has been referred to as the heart of the scorpion since antiquity, and we now know that it is one of the largest stars in existence. The dense nebulousity blocks the usual sprawling star fields that are normally seen near the galactic plane. Instead the area is littered with dim reddish stars, which are typically very young T Tauri stars. Such stars are among the youngest visible stars with masses comparable to our Sun. At the end of it's drive on sol 951, April 10, 2015, Curiosity acquired these 5 overlapping left mast camera. Roughly stitched together to form this mosaic. The rover was on a down slope and that probably accounts for the poor coverage of the mosaic, but the team chose to drive around this sand without testing it. Probably a wise decision.
