Also sorry about the Kickstarter, but kinda inspired by the adaptable pivot! Might I suggest adding this link to your linktree?

Also my new standard for airline wheelchair services is "did you participate in a conversation with me about disproportionate police brutality rates against BIPOC neurodivergents and acknowledge social inequities you weren't previously aware of AND get me to the gate on time". #criptravel

A terribly, terribly bleak year to be a multiply-disabled, mixed-Black, autistic lefty Jew. 🫤 May this next year at least be... an ultimate net positive?? 🤷🏽‍♀️

2) the centering of a sort of authoritarian power structure as the default launching point for quests. Consider - how often do characters start in some kind of monarchy, directed by or assisting formal peacekeepers/guard authorities to go out and bring 'civilization to the wilds. (cont)

My issues with D&D are really about boilerplate pseudo-medieval fantasy generally.
1) the tricky territory of 'race', probably the 2nd most important character creation decision. even changing it to 'ancestry'/etc is trying to build over a bad foundation. 'Race=species' is baked into the *lore*.

Not that I think the programs using it are doing it wrong, or that D&D doesn't offer a rich environment to tell stories in, but there are some elements fundamental to the game that have never sat quite right with me. & practically speaking, it's a fairly costly franchise to get into.

There are several programs (apparently 3 others just in the couple of blocks around us) that use D&D for similar purposes, which makes sense; it's ubiquitous, easily parsed, & ready-made content is abundant.

I'm curious what those look like in play, but I more or less *refused* to run D&D.

The goal was/has been to provide an alternative 'third space' kind of thing to a bar or other sensory overwhelm hell that makes socializing even harder than it already is when you're intensely anxious and self-conscious about just *being* in the world, much less make friends in it. A pilot project.

I have to say, it's been a minute since I've played any Civ, but your deep pride in your narrative work (and the obvious attention to detail!) has been a more compelling reason to buy a game than any trailer or list of features has ever been. Sad to miss this GDC, would have loved to attend this.

I think a fair number of them would migrate to Truth Social, but your point stands.
