The late-stage capitalism (and evidently late stage democracy) going on now with all the DOGE bullshit is going to undermine so much cool and interesting stuff. Do we really need to fund research on how blue whales sing songs to avoid detection by killer whales? Probably not. Do I want my tax dollars spent on doing stuff like that? Absolutely. It is good to just know stuff. It is good to have smart people out studying stuff and expanding our overall body of knowledge. Not everything needs to or should tie directly to a bottom line. A DOGE-like thing is needed and has been needed for a long time. The problem is that it is currently run by and for asshats that have no interest in doing what is good nor any curiosity into why something might be good.
