I am a grandmother, dog lover, and blue dot in a red state.

Rex, I promise I will continue to dream of a better world and work to improve it.

Floridians: do not forget to update your vote by mail request. The state "expired" all of them at the end of 2024 and if you do not update, you will not receive the ballot in the mail for the very important upcoming mid-term elections!

Years ago, I had a supervisor who would greet me and then ask "what have you done in service to your nation today?" Clearly, he was reminding me that as citizens we have a duty to defend our nation in whatever way it needs us.
So, I ask you, what have you done?

"The strength of power and despotism consists wholly in the fear of resistance." Thomas Paine

Why don't we require reading Common Sense in high school, college, and, well, for every American?

I keep seeing a Thomas Paine quote about these trying times. It is not the quote that ought to inspire us, but the sentiment behind it. Keep on livin' your life, impervious (or so you think) to what is happening around you. You will suffer, as others already are, in the end. Or, stand up and fight.

If we focus on faux attempts to destroy six Democrats who spoke truth to power, we may forget about Epstein. No...it's too salacious, and we know that the truth will out. It always does.

At 16, I demonstrated for the passage of the ERA. I understood, experienced, and fought against the misogynistic, patriarchy that continues to exist in the US. At 16.
"Quiet Piggy" and NOT ONE PERSON CALLED HIM OUT? The main stream press is as complicit as the men who continue to abuse women.

While I'm posting on the latest news, Novo Nordisk is not an American company and there's no need or actual reason to give the president and his sons any interest in that company.
(I am not a fan of big pharma but this assertion that they owe the president is beyond the pale. Just saying...)

I'm tutoring a HS student who is taking American Government. Our deep dive into the US Constitution (and Declaration of Independence) has been quite enlightening.
I recommend reacquainting yourselves with both documents and then contacting your representatives asking them to do their job.

An impending disaster unfolding in this country will negate the need for fat-busting drugs from any pharma company. Let's focus on eliminating the abrogation of human rights by reinstating SNAP. Letting children die of starvation will not be a good look for anyone.

What if it isn't about a big, garish, ballroom but the bunker underneath it? It would be quite handy when one loses an election but does not want to vacate the People's House...

Re: Publix (and Florida) Open Carry
My boycott list now includes their pharmacy. I'm saddened by this - their pharmacists do such a great job at educating and prescribing. I refuse to enter a store that accepts open carry. Florida: the "free" state that care more about guns than people.

My mom insisted her phone was spying on her. Nothing we did could convince her otherwise. She pulled it off the wall and demanded I "shoot the hell out of it". I quietly replaced it when she took a nap. She had dementia...This is a post about The Rose City.

I can disagree with what you say but I will defend your right to say it.

Dear northern friends, I am no longer taking "WTF FLORIDA" questions. I just cannot. There's no defense for the indefensible.

Instead of worrying about 2028, we need to face the fact that we are on the cliff's edge of losing (if we have not already lost) our democracy. If Dem governors are beating the wannabe dictator with their pushback, support it. We can sort out the dem nominee after we win back our democracy.

A new law in Florida removed all vote by mail requests from voter rolls 12/31/2024. If you voted by mail in the past, you must reregister to vote by mail in the future. There's a quick, easy online reregistration process available through your supervisor of elections website.

Turns out studying philosophy is actually valuable. Philosophy majors don’t just argue well, they actually become better thinkers and do better on tests.

Data from 600k students shows they outscore every other major on reasoning, curiosity and open-mindedness.

Studying philosophy does make people better thinkers, according to new research on more than 600,000 college grads
Philosophers are fond of saying that their field boosts critical thinking. Two of them decided to put that claim to the test.

A student in one of my online classes died in the Pulse Nightclub massacre. Removing rainbows from intersections and memorials will not ever erase the fact that it happened and will not make anything great again.
I see rainbows everywhere.

Housing is a human right. Willfully destroying whatever was being used as housing for the unhoused, in DC or anywhere in the US, is a violation of that right. There's a remedy for that violation. Who is willing to stand up and defend those who, for whatever reason, are unhoused?
