The social pressures to control one’s identity that are so prominent in the movie are not unfamiliar to me; Though I personally was lucky enough to grow up in a privileged and liberal environment, it was still within a rather conservative country, so I know plenty of people, some very close to me

the anxieties around masculinity and fatherhood in china right now are complicated and often contrasting

the #KoreanCoffeeCulture fits in well with my pre-existing ideas about the work culture here; that being said i was surprised to see just how many middle-aged and especially older people are walking around drinking iced americanos - the coffee culture is very VISIBLE

the pressure to be beautiful is overwhelming for many women in society which is bad enough on its own, but unfortunately these pressures have been continuously reaching younger and younger girls, with the #MilkySpicy trend showing adult beauty standards pushed on girls as young as 4-5yo

The kind of organised fandom that we’re talking about here includes elements that go way beyond being a fan: organising large groups of people, fundraising and managing resources effectively, spreading messaging widely through the use of hashtags, images, videos etc;

Being invested in foreign media and pop-culture can be motivating for people to learn the original language of what they’re into — whether it’s anime, K-pop or anything else — in a different way than when people are driven to learn a language for say career-related reasons

micro-aggressions directed at Asians are often rooted in popular stereotypes generalised to “all asians” and based on tropes often popularised by western entertainment and media - comments such as “can you help me with math” or assuming an asian woman is “shy” or “quiet”

It would make sense that Korea would object to seeing Japanese elements in K-pop but still expect their media to be consumed and well received there simply due to the direction of colonisation - they may still have resentment about historic attempts of Japan to influence and even erase 1/3

WEEK 1
In pop-culture broadly, but to my knowledge rather prominently in east-asian pop-culture, the kinds of people and dynamics often represented don’t cover a very wide scope. It’s obviously the most noticeable in terms of looks of the actors and entertainers making it into the spotlight 1/4
