Women leaders reshape African governance
Staff Reporter
PRESIDENT Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has reaffirmed the need for inclusive leadership, stronger mentorship among women leaders, and continental cooperation on shared resources during a high-level Presidential Fireside Conversation held on the margins of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa. The dialogue brought together current and former female Heads of State, continental institutions, and global partners to advance peace, sustainable development, and women’s leadership across Africa.
The event, themed “Beyond Barriers: Women Leaders Reshaping African Governance”, was co-convened by Namibia through its Mission in Addis Ababa. President Nandi-Ndaitwah shared the stage with former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in a candid exchange on leadership, resilience, and governing in spaces traditionally dominated by men. The conversation was moderated by Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda of UN Women.

Speakers reflected on the journeys of women leaders who have challenged long-standing assumptions and reshaped governance across the continent, stressing that leadership is grounded in character, resilience, and service rather than competition, and can be exercised in all spheres of life, not only politics.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah said that progress in advancing women’s leadership has not been achieved by women alone, acknowledging the role of supportive male counterparts who challenged outdated traditions and backed expanded leadership roles for women. She also underscored the importance of women supporting one another through mentorship and strong networks to sustain progress for future generations.
Referring to the African Union’s 2026 theme on sustainable water and sanitation under Agenda 2063, the President warned that climate change is placing growing pressure on land and water resources. In arid regions, shrinking grazing land and competition over scarce water sources risk fuelling instability and conflict if not responsibly managed, she said, calling for stronger continental cooperation on shared resources.
The session concluded with renewed calls for solidarity, inclusive leadership, and intergenerational cooperation to ensure Africa’s governance reflects the voices and aspirations of all its people.
