Samara silently picked the pepperoni off her pizza, eating one at a time, to finally eat the gooey, oily slice bare, a habit her long-time friend Jennifer found peeving. Colm found it captivating, just like he found almost everything Sam did. Jenny and Alonso noticed his infatuation from the start. While Alonso found Colm’s behavior embarrassing, she thought it was endearing. Guys their age were too awkward to approach her, and older guys—mostly jerks—either had the wrong idea or their minds were in the gutter. Alysse neither noticed nor cared. Sam and Colm went in for the last slice simultaneously. Her greasy fingers brushed his, which made him jerk his arm back. He tried composing himself and cleared his throat nervously. It was too late; Samara noticed his reaction and was surprised but genuinely charmed.

Text: Book One. The Yellow Wizard
Dreams.
Her bare feet left subtle tracks in the sand. He paused and let her walk ahead so he could admire her from afar. The ocean breeze played havoc with her auburn locks of hair, but the straw hat she wore kept them contained. Barely. Just as his passion for her was. He fretted that the salinity in the air might be too harsh for her delicate alabaster skin. The wind pressed the linen dress against her, enhancing the classic proportions of her alluring body. She stopped and turned, and their eyes met. His heart ached and he realized it was painful for her, too.

“I beg you, would you tell me your name this time?” He stretched his arm to her. For the first time in his recurring dream, she smiled. It was bittersweet. She opened her lips and replied, but a gust of wind stole her name away. The stiff wind lingered until her lovely figure was blown away, too, like grains in a pillar of sand. “No!”

He woke up screaming for her. This time, he wailed for a moment but instantly composed himself. He stared at the cobra-shaped hilt of his walking cane; its ruby eyes glared back. His heart grew dark, and he snatched the cane. The time had come to reclaim what was stolen from him, just like his memories of her were.

The Five Full Moons is a preamble to The Eighteen Books series, where an ambitious man jilts his wife in 1930s New England to become a ruthless warlock in another realm and, centuries later, is cursed, banished, and challenged by his descendants from both realms (a modern-day 13-year-old girl star athlete and a beloved sorceress queen) with help from the Eighteen Enchanted Books, five teens, the town sheriff, a mysterious nurse, and a slew of magical allies, as archangels (mindful of the unbridled powers the warlock can usurp) decide the fate of both worlds.
