I had to abandon the book too! Too many pronouns…. I couldn’t easily work out who was being referred to when I picked up where I’d left off.

Some of the most memorable were Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew, Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Secret Garden - which now I realise says a lot about my need even then of strong & independent female characters.
