Hot off the press! 🔥 our new case study on political lobbying by the baby food industry and how it influenced New Zealand governments decision to opt out of regulations intended to protect infant health. Please see below for the full article 👇 with congrats to Naomi Hull for her leadership on this!

🧵3/3 This is timely given the current work in Australia to restrict the marketing of infant formula and what the formula industry has to say about it. You can read what they are saying about the matter (publicly) here ➡️ www.accc.gov.au/public-regis... and ➡️ www.health.gov.au/resources/pu...

🧵2/3 The NZ govt bowed to lobbying, departing from the revised standard to limit misleading labels on formula tins. Evidence of many meetings between formula execs and NZ ministers. Strong regulation of lobbying needed to safeguard infant health from profit. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

To demonstrate my point - here is a collection of media headings from the last week. If you have seen any that are the counterpoint aside from Clare's (above) I'd love to hear about them 🙏

3/3 News articles about the lack of formula supply are what the formula industry loves - elevation of importance and 'life-saving' nature of the tinned powder. Plus, the halo effect for donating their product. Meanwhile, women are left malnourished, unsupported and even separated from their babies.

2/3 While I understand there will be a need for formula to be supplied, given the high loss of women's lives in this protracted, man-made conflict, I wonder where the media callout is for better support of women (provision of safe space and counselling) and protection of breastfeeding?

Overnight, the member nations of the World Health Assembly moved to regulate the digital marketing of commercial milk formulas and baby foods. www.who.int/news/item/26...

It was a priveledge also to be asked to speak on the topic of infant formula regulation - that we could also think of as 'breastfeeding protection'. Joined by Australian Breastfeeding Association, WBTiAUS and other colleagues was a positive robust discussion

1/2 Thank's to PHAA for great opportunity to meet+engage with Dept of health and colleagues on Aust'n regulatory issues. Fantastic to have infants and young children on the agenda - marketing of infant formula and of commercial foods for IYC. www.prevention2025.com/fprf @publichealthaus.bsky.social

And the leading story - how the NZ Govt was lobbied to leave the updated FSANZ regulation of formula tin labelling threatening it would impact sales to China and Danone would have tot ake their business elsewhere (out of NZ). www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
How multinational dairy companies convinced ministers to back away from new rules for baby formula
Tougher guidelines were 11 years in the making. But for multinational dairy companies, profits were at stake.
