Alex gave an overview of the CUSP curriculum, focusing on writing and geography. Foundational knowledge and then revisiting it with more complexity was crucial. Alex emphasised the importance of connecting abstract concepts to real-world experiences and local contexts.

In my last video I examined DFES’s 2025 Framework for writing. One of my observations was that the teaching of handwriting did not take into account children’s physical development at reception age. Mark-making and emergent writing was downplayed. So here is one I did earlier!

DfE Writing Framework 2025

Issued at the end of term in July, as a guidance document I think it has a number of flaws.

This video does not intend to summarise the entire document but hilight some worrying omissions, some deliberate, you need to be aware.

School's Week has pointed out, the timing is poor because, '...it has been released before the culmination of the curriculum review'. Practitioners are upset by how much emergent writing has been down-played and even ruled out.
