I spent years thinking I wasn't good enough to tell the story, but... An imperfectly told story is more valuable than a theoretically perfect one that never gets made.

Hey, this is my comic!
I started writing for this in 2013, after a long drive in the Highlands with my best friend, making jokes about a story that gradually morphed into its own thing.
It's been really dear to my heart, and taken me around Scotland, exploring our history and folklore.

Sold some of my wares at the coin operated press hallozine fair yesterday 👻
It was really fun. Immediately spent half of my profits on other people's zines and the other half on a band t-shirt in the evening. Oh well.

I was a freak. I know because everyone told me so. They said I didn't fit in, the way I dressed & the way I spoke & the way I liked things too much
But I left school, as we all do if we survive long enough, & met new people. they didn't know I wasn't cool.
So was cool not an inherent quality?
I found ppl who thought I was cool. maybe online cool isn't really cool but it was a taster. They didn't even care when I was a freak
Nobody told me cool was fragile. It seemed intrinsic. Inalienable

If I changed even a single atom of who I was, would it shatter like glass? If I was being watched & judged at all times, what if I slipped?
"I thought u were cool."
Cutting. Devastating. U say the wrong thing & your status is revoked. Rub off the shoddy paint job, find the freak beneath
I withdrew entirely from society for a while. Cool doesnt matter when it's just u & ur 4 walls
I escaped eventually. gave up impressing folk. Easier 2 exist if it's just me & my fellow freaks

Idk when people started thinking I was cool when I wasn't trying. I'm being a freak on purpose bc that's what I am & what I've always been
It's alluring, but it's a double edged sword. I've started to parry
If I chase cool & accept cool as currency then I have to live up to others expectations
If I make myself cool for 4 myself I don't need validation
I'm not cool. I'm a freak
If you think I'm cool, that's ur business. I will not adapt myself to continue to win ur approval
I'm thru being cool

For all the people I used to be, and all the freaks being who makes them happy.

You love to stop me on the street to take photos without asking. Why wouldn't u? U think I'm a performer, an attraction, just because I'm not in jeans and a t-shirt. A man in a skirt has to be a spectacle
You're uncomfortable seeing people living on the streets. I get it. I know at least a dozen people stuck in homeless accommodation for months bc landlords earn more bleeding you dry for your Airbnb than housing locals. So I'm uncomfortable 2
