Every fall, we watch all the good Halloween sitcom episodes and every year I am reminded:

I do; i reread Lord of the Rings about once every two years.

But my comfort read is the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough. Just so readable; pick it up and put it down at any point in the story. There’s always one in the bedside table in case I need it.

A lovely meditation on returning to Narnia as an adult. Nathan gets it right yet again, "One thing you see right from the start is that, unlike Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Narnia is a series for children."

Some that were rejected as not really fitting the profile after learning more:

- JFK (dynasty, family tragedy, etc.)
- Metternich (became Gora bim Gral)
- Mark Twain (famous in his lifetime)
- Lincoln (they have almost nothing in common)
- Sally Ride (doesn't make any sense, just is very neat)

Keeping Up Appearances actor Patricia Routledge dies aged 96

The actor was best known for her role as the pretentious housewife Hyacinth Bucket, and for the series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates Patricia Routledge, the stage and screen actor best known for starring as Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances and Henrietta “Hetty” Wainthropp in the television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, has died at the age of 96. Routledge was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, in 1929 and attended the University of Liverpool and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She began her career in theatre and musical theatre in 1952, later making her Broadway debut in 1966 in How’s the World Treating You. Routledge would go on to win a Tony award and an Olivier for her stage work, and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for several years, appearing in productions including Richard III, alongside Antony Sher. It is neither what we call his Presidency nor what the position to which I was elected is called. By the time Archer had left, the average citizen of the Federation would know the position simply as the "President of the Federation."

From 2185 to 2192, President Archer fundamentally changed what the idea of Federation government truly meant. To unravel his impact on the Federation, I immediately remind the reader that the position to which he was elected was the “OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERATION COUNCIL”.

There will be a hundred pieces this week attempting to pick through the “big cases” to be decided in the approaching term—although, to be sure, most of the big cases will be added in the months to come. But focusing on a handful of “big cases” relies on your predicate agreement as a reader that the court that will decide them, with all the oyez and the gravitas, is still behaving, in the main, like a court. The challenge will be to seek out that which the court is obscuring in this performance of business as usual this term, and to understand that the red curtains and the black robes have very rapidly come to serve as props in a performance of judicial legitimacy that is no longer worth the price of admission.
