What happens when you don't track your lap speed? In my case, you run the last km of your long run at faster than 5k pace... last km was 4:17/km, according to the splits. I have no idea how I managed that. Maybe I'm selling myself short with some paces.

Yes, I will stop my run to wave at animals and take pictures.

They were right at the side of the trail when I came back at a fast finishing kick. They looked startled by my speed, then remembered I had waved and said hello on the way out. They know I'm a friend.

I'm back running in the winter weather I am used to. No more sub zero temperatures. Single digits and raining.

My new Asics shoes feel really good, too. Might be because they don't have 800km on them.

Even added some speed work, with the last km at race pace (4:28/km)

Been quiet lately. Work is taking a lot of my energy.

But I have new running shoes! For the first time in 6 years, I'll be running in something other than Brooks.

Mostly because Brooks is American and... ya know...

Dad ran in Asics, so it's a family thing.

Well, @adorabear.bsky.social made a new friend.

Yes, that is a life sized Bulbasaur plush.

Yes, it will be in the bed with us.

No, I have no idea how we will manage that.

The cats will deal for a few days.

First organized half marathon in two years and a PR of over 2 minutes.

I may have been offered a wheelchair at the finish line. Though I refused.

Not the time I was hoping for, but a PR is a PR. Better than I did 2 years ago and today was a hillier route in the snow.

Woke up ready to run. Checked the weather and... -8C, feels like -11C? We'll wait until lunch time to run. It's supposed to get up to -2C by then...

I will run in almost anything, but I have my limits.

Me: I want to see runners on my feed.

BlueSky: you're queer, here's queer content.

Me: no... runners, please.

BS: gotcha, here's some soccer.

Me: runners! Any distance!

BS: we can't help you if you don't engage with any posts.

Me: show me running posts. I'll engage. Men or women at this point.
February 1, 2025 at 7:28 PM
It was a good run, but I was going for better. Trying to set a 5k PR running into sideways rain is not happening. But, I did some race pace work, at least.

One week to the First Half.

With the trade for Marcus Pettersson, the Canucks have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever.

We declare a monopoly on Petterssons!

Oskar Pettersson is ours now.

Cal Peterson? Close enough. Ours now.

D Petey, Riley Paterson and these? Shorty would hate us.

Took me a while to get out the door for my run, which screwednup my whole schedule, but it was a good run. 30 minutes at 4:29/km, which is goal pace for my race in two weeks.

Also, a bit warmer today that it was all week, which was very nice.

Garmin has me tapering for my next race.

I politely disagree with the idea of a 3 week taper on a 13 week half marathon training plan.

So, I ran more. Which... goven that I have a sore neck and it was -3C, I may have been better off tapering.

For no reason, here is an adorable squirrel I saw while out running.
January 22, 2025 at 6:31 AM
Well, not the run I had hoped for, but a run is a run. Need to get back to fueling like an athlete. Cannot keep eating garbage and expect to run at the level I am seeking.

Granted, last night's poutine was delicious... just nailed the gravy...

I've decided to skip my push workout to watch Hockey Day in Canada with @adorabear.bsky.social along with a number of stuffed animals.

We have all dressed chips, nanaimo bars and we're having poutine. A very Canadian day.

And yes, we switched jerseys. My Canucks jersey is autographed.
January 19, 2025 at 4:14 AM
Today is @adorabear.bsky.social first Hockey Day in Canada as a citizen and they aee getting into it.

Gave them my Habs jersey and they are making sure that our stuffed beaver and house hippo are watching, too.

Tonight, there will be poutine.

Parled my wife in front of a hockey game and then went for a run.

My wife laments how much time I spend running on their days off. But, on Hockey Day in Canada, I heard no complaints.

Getting close to my next race. But I'm still making progress.

I wanted to try and PR the 5k today. I also wanted the massive plate of pub nachos last night. So today I had to suffer.

Poor sleep because of the food (relfux) meant I was a little sluggish and only did what was written in the training plan.

But those jalapenos were worth it...
January 18, 2025 at 6:53 AM
Today, @adorabear.bsky.social and I went to our happy place! Spent the afternoon on Granville Island, had some good food (they had agadashi tofu curry), lots of treats and we loaded up on tea. A good day.
January 18, 2025 at 6:50 AM
Had two days of rest (one planned, one not) because of the covid and flu shots.

You'd think I'd come back strong from the extra rest, but no... heart rate was weirdly high on this run.

The sub zero temperatures did not help, either.
January 15, 2025 at 11:58 PM
No workout today. First unscheduled rest day of this training cycle.

Really, I got my covid and flu shot and am just having the post vaccination symptoms. They should pass in a day or two.

Plus, arm is so sore I can barely move it. And you want me to lift the 50lb dumbells? No, thank you.
January 14, 2025 at 4:26 AM
Great day for a run! Cool and clear. Which also meant that the trail was very busy with people trying to keep up their resolutions. A lot of cyclists who haven't learned to share the trail yet.

But, with this run, I'm willing to say I'm recovered from my marathon and Covid in October.
January 13, 2025 at 4:42 AM
I'm following a Garmin training plan to try and get faster as I train for a half marathon, it has me doing a lot of speed work at faster than 5k pace. But given that I've run a near PR 10k and did leg day in the past 24 hours, I did not have that in me today.
January 12, 2025 at 1:28 AM
There's an irony to the fact that my headphones died while playing "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen...

It was a good day for a run, even if I was underfueled. I tried so hard to get a charge in my headphones that I didn't eat enough before running. Oh well...
