I've been thinking a lot about what Tenna must experience when he's unplugged. This is one version of that experience.

The regularity and comfort of family routine is long gone, replaced with this endless void, as far as the eye can see. It’s dark. So dark. He tried running. He tried screaming. He tried beating his head against the floor until he was sure his screen would shatter, a magnificent implosion to light up his prison. Nothing made a difference. He thinks, and he thinks, and he cannot come up with answers, because perhaps it was meant to be this way: a short, fiery life, full of sound and color, burning bright with purpose, and it all signified nothing, because he was no longer needed. He resigns himself to his fate, trapped in the unknown. And then the familiar zing of electricity along his tail calls to him. He tightens the antenna cable on the back of his head, and his memory is filled with channels, settings, light. Two Lightners peer at him through the screen, one a stranger, and one dear to his heart. Somehow, he knows: this is his last chance. And so he stands.
