I’m thinking about when it was (briefly) fashionable to be a good person and people were constantly being accused of ‘virtue signalling’. Was it really so bad if people were pretending to care more than they did? Better than now when people happily advertise all their absolute worst traits.

I know this is obvious when you think about it but we don’t think about it enough: fascists have to cow & persecute decent journalists to prevent them from reporting exactly what they, the fascists, are doing. This. Also far right and islamist extremists have a lot in common (subjugation of lgbtq people, strong beliefs about how women should dress and behave and in male supremacy, non belief in democracy, extreme interpretation of holy books to suit their political ends etc).
