We send in troopers to seize people's SUVs, of course.

Or, you know, you create policies, mostly targeted at cities, that incentivize transit and other modes and disincentivize car ownership, esp. of large polluting cars, e.g. higher taxes on vehicle weight.

There's 300 million cars in the US. 1/2 million is less than 2/10 of a percent of that. Maybe talk about getting rid of a few of those.

Do you mean they're being bought to rent out? Is that how you're using the term "investor?"

The ethics and legality of reuse are very different in creative arts compared to the open source programming community. I use LLMs for coding but am hostile to their use in other fields where IP holders have had no say in how their IP is used.

I'm about to move and I was thinking the same thing for the move.

"Investors" in that article means anyone who is buying a home to rent. That is not the same as "institutional investors". Here's a handy chart. Every single home for rent in California is owned by an "investor". But a tiny percent of those are institutional

Haven't done this, but it looks like you can use the arrow package to convert JSON to a parquet file, then use arrow and dplyr-like syntax to manipulate the data

I don't need to trust you. I know what you're advocating for is the failed status quo policy that I've lived with in San Francisco for years.

Here's the quote:
“The concern of all the advocates behind [the tax] was these properties ... [are] being used like shares of stock in the stock market for real estate investors to buy them and hold them for years and then resell them at higher values for profit.”

You can find irl examples if you look up any debate on local vacancy taxes. Tenant unions and other non-profits are vocal supporters of these bills and usually repeat the above argument. Look at the quote from Dean Preston (former supervisor, DSA member) in this article.

San Francisco Considers Pausing Empty Homes Tax | KQED
In 2022, San Francisco voters approved a tax meant to open up housing units that were otherwise vacant. But the tax has been held up in litigation, and city officials haven’t been able to implement it...

SFMTA has put one in on Kirkham in the Sunset, I think as a trial balloon for a slow streets treatment. Not surprisingly, people have freaked out about it. I think the Presidio versions are better thought out, though.
