Teaching Political Science and World History in Abu Dhabi — Skeets mainly about the Seattle Sounders, the state of the world, and my generalized grumpiness

I'm reading "Careless People" by Sarah Wynn-Williams.

She was early-ish at Facebook and had the primary vision for making it a platform for political organizing.

The equal parts hubris, naivety, and ambition on display in the early chapters are startling, even knowing how badly things end up.

If you like a British police procedural as much as I do, think "Line of Duty", "Broadchurch", and "Luther", I highly suggest you check out "Blue Lights."

It's set in Belfast and is very well written and excellently acted.

Funny how that works. The US debt was in the billions in 1980.

YouTube ripped off Spotify's Wrapped feature. Mine is a comedic snapshot of my interests.

Trigger warning for listeners in Tacoma.

The light rail connection to the Tacoma Dome isn't due to be completed for another decade: 2035.

Imagine if Bob's Java Jive (or your local dive bar) was a two story complex that occupied an entire city block, and felt like an anarchist squat from the 1930s.

Hungarian food is deeply underrated. It's designed to keep you full and warm through comedically cold winters.

I'll have more thoughts on this later but I'm struck by many of the markers and memorials to the Holocaust and deportation of Hungarian Jews.

They're often written in that passive exculpatory tense US media use for police shootings.

Gathered here by who? Deported by who?

Looking at the likes on this post. What do you reckon the odds are that this is an actual person? Further how likely is it the person matches the bio?

Thinking about young professionals today likely heading into their first major market correction.

This is the 2008/9 Great Recession bottom and the total US market ever since.

When the AI bubble pops the market will tumble but selling locks in a loss.

At some point I'm going to truly internalize that @sarahkendzior.bsky.social has been right about all of this from day one

Also, I finished the source material for Netflix's "Department Q" over the weekend. It's called "The Keeper of Lost Causes."

It's incredibly compelling.

Some of the changes they made are improvements, others aren't. Akram/Assad remains a gem.

My intro to noir novels was via the Southern variety, by way of Elmore Leonard.

I hadn't read James Ellroy, nor given him much thought until @jordanharper.bsky.social mentioned him in an interview this summer.

I cracked into "LA Confidential" today and holy hell, I get it! It goes hard as hell.

I think about it a lot.

I can prob afford to retire at or around 50 but not if I had to pay $35,000 in health care premiums. Cigna offers insurance for foreign nationals living in Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, etc.

It's rather reasonable.

Had my eye on a watch. Reading the fine print, from the seller my wife pointed out the tariff language.

I refuse to believe they actually published that. You're just trolling the TL. No way... Man, lemmie go double check...

Wow. These folks are WILDIN'!
