In World Two Two, American GIs were equipped with high-powered M1 Garand semi-automatic rifles (one of the finest firearms of the time) while most German soldiers were still using five-round bolt-action rifles that weren't much different than their Great War counterparts.

Even worse, they allegedly maintained forced laborers to do their bidding, on the threat of eternal damnation if they failed to work hard enough or bring in enough cash.

They were apparently told that disappointing the ministers was tantamount to disappointing God.

Lutnick on being invited over to his then-neighbor Jeffrey Epstein's house: He invites us in and there's a massage table in the middle of the room. I say, "Massage table in the middle of your house? How often you have a massage?

And he says, "Every day...and the right kind of massage."

In "1984", narrator Winston Smith goes to the movies.

One of the flicks features a helicopter attacking civilians in a lifeboat. It's clear from Smith's description that this scene is intended to be inspirational, not horrific.

The point is to underscore the brutality of Big Brother's regime.

I wrote a book on the subject.

On June 27, 1918, German U-boat 86 torpedoed the Llandovery Castle, a clearly marked Canadian hospital ship, then tried to murder survivors.

At a 1921 trial about the attack, a German court said the attack on survivors was an obvious war crime.

On this day in 1957, U.S. Army troops escorted the Little Rock Nine to Central High School in Arkansas. Less well known—in August 1958 all the city's high schools were closed for a year to resist integration. Students learned through televised lessons, as shown in these photos.
