This project would not have happened were it not for Nate's book.

A real honor to nearly bookend (with a late cameo following earlier more substantive appearances!) this amazing series. The depth and breadth of Matt's work here is truly awe inspiring. (And good morning to my brother in late-alphabetical sorting, Yanis Varoufakis.)

Who said it, Emily Brontë or Werner Herzog?

‘Nature is an inexplicable problem; it exists on a principle of destruction. Every being must be the tireless instrument of death to others, or itself must cease to live, yet nonetheless we celebrate the day of our birth, & we praise God for having entered such a world’. Emily Brontë, 1842

no disrespect but is your supposedly exciting "archival find" more impressive than this?
"Ok this is exciting. new archival discovery of a young Melville's first art project!"

I did indeed. Even I couldn't make a Moby-Dick joke out of it -- simply too rad.

Leading to Ahab’s famous reply, “I came here to chew bubblegum and kick one fish’s ass, and I’m all out of bubblegum”

I came here to hunt whales, not my commander’s vengeance.

fwiw “taught me a lot about whales” is part of the joke bc Ahab muses extensively on the “meaning” of whales, or rather one specific whale, in a monomaniacal, Manichean, metaphysical framework; Ishmael seems to take up this obsession but translate it into a more rationalistic idiom of taxonomy etc 🐳

The whale is a spouting fish with a horizontal tail! #BelieveScience

[new Isaac Chotiner interview]
But he got your crewmates killed?

I don't recall the details. He was a very magnetic person. He taught me a lot about whales. I don’t know anyone who showed that level of curiosity.

Well, next time someone brings up a terrible anecdote about The Pequod I will definitely drop the "whale facts" thing to show that people have two sides.

Yeah.

"The Commission’s co-chairs seem insistent on becoming the patrons of one particular faction of MA Jews—not only providing a platform for them to dominate a different faction but also empowering them to use their access as “court Jews” to destroy the right to free expression in our state."

again just a gentle reminder that Melville intended this to be read in Pee-wee Herman's "I know you are but what am I?" voice

Genuinely great thread. Also this is how Matt Seybold's seductive baritone on the "American Vandal" podcast radicalized me into a Keynesian

American media has been manufacturing parasocial reactionaries for decades. Limbaugh, Beck, Shapiro, Jones, Carlson, Hannity, etc. The importance of these figures is not ideological purity, consistency, inventiveness, etc. It’s that they keep you company in your cab, your cubicle, on your commute.
