Again, it wasn't that he knew anything about how to organise shipboard entertainments, nor that he was particularly amusing or entertaining in himself. The reason he had inflicted himself on this branch of the service was simply because he enjoyed going to parties. Of course, being an officer, he expected others to organise the events, do the catering, arrange the music. He felt his function was simply to shout a lot and be thoroughly unpleasant if the event did not come up to his exacting standards. Whether the passengers enjoyed themselves was unimportant. The event was only considered a success if he had.
