Whether we like it or not, AI is here and not going anywhere. The excellent colleagues behind @callingbullshit.bsky.social (@jevinwest.bsky.social & @carlbergstrom.com) now have a great resource to help us understand AI and how to deal with it. Highly recommended!

All correlations among value ratings are positive (Table 1). This highlights limitation of Likert scales: some people really like smashing the "Absolutely Essential" button. We thus have to transform data to meaningfully measure prioritization among values bsky.app/profile/nath...

Like much of my work, this is arguably a measurement paper in disguise (since measurement is "boring"). For me, the spark behind the paper stems from an argument I heard long ago that deep political disagreements are rooted less in holding different values and more in selecting values to prioritize.

Check out our latest ARPA @aspanational.bsky.social article: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

@nathanfavero.com, @colt-jensen.bsky.social, @minjungckim.bsky.social, & I examine how political ideology & public service motivation influence public value preferences.
nathanfavero.com
Equity is the value with most varied responses. Self-identified liberals indicate higher importance for equity (no surprise) but also representation.
Screenshot from article: Most notably, we find that the prioritization of equity exhibits the greatest variation across respondents from different backgrounds and social identities, suggesting that the importance of this value, more than others, remains contested and context-dependent. Similarly, representation—while generally held as a high priority by the public—is considered especially important by liberal-leaning individuals. Thus, when it comes to symbolic representation (see Keiser et al., 2022), pursuit of a representative bureaucracy may enjoy particularly widespread support among liberal constituencies. These examples suggest that public administrators should acknowledge citizens’ heterogeneous

🧵I was surprised to find that people rate representation as more important than equity or efficiency, when asked to assess values for public services. From my latest work with @jaclynpiatak.bsky.social @colt-jensen.bsky.social & @minjungckim.bsky.social
Screenshot of Table 1 from article linked to later in thread. Summary stats (means). Equity	2.982. Efficiency	2.964. Effectiveness	3.199. Representation	3.136. N = 814; Response options: Not Important at all (0), Of little importance (1), Of average importance (2), Very Important (3), Absolutely Essential (4).

How do government capacities shape the burdens citizens face when accessing public services?

This study shows that administrative capacities, such as communication strategies, resource availability, and inter-agency coordination, can either reduce or intensify administrative burdens.

Do right-leaning governments run state-owned enterprises (SOEs) better?

This new research from Brazil (2019–2022) finds that SOEs perform better financially under more right-leaning incumbents—but only when their political parties focus on policy over power.

Got it. I only meant to be describing my department (in the US); I have no idea about others. My impression is that grade inflation is much less of an issue in Europe, so I can imagine the letters assume less importance (the grades already give a clear signal of how professors assess students!)
nathanfavero.com
As a bit of an aside, grade inflation + GRE optional policies arguably make the letters much more important than before (not sure if this is a good thing or not)
nathanfavero.com
Even for obvious admits, I assume the letters could affect aid offers, GA offers, etc.
nathanfavero.com
But the letters did get read. By multiple people, I assume (I don’t think I was the only one reading them)
nathanfavero.com
I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you, as the time involved in writing such letters may outweigh benefits. But when I’ve been on an admissions committee (for a masters program), I definitely did read the letters. Granted, there were a whole set of auto admits who never reached my desk.
