Alder Fuentes is a former dean of restorative practices. She’s visited my students a number of times to talk about neighborhood issues. She’s always looking for root causes, always looking to deescalate crisis situations. The contrast between her and these agents couldn’t be more striking.

Chicago Ald. Jessie Fuentes' office has released video of federal agents handcuffing her at Humboldt Park Health, as she asked them to present a judicial warrant for another arrest.

The President is threatening to occupy our Black-led city with federal troops. We already have ICE and CPD in our neighborhoods, now Black and Brown families face the possibility of even more policing.

Knowledge is power & together we will protect our students and each other.

I wrote a little about my experiences at the International Center for Education on Auschwitz and the Holocaust (ICEAH) this summer and what it means to be a social studies teacher in this moment. withtheworld.beehiiv.com/p/choosing-t...

The Measure of a Man is relatively early and teaches folks what the show is really about. Feel like folks who watch it are prepared for a lot of later episodes.

This quote got me: “…the ubiquity of college-level work in high school has blurred the boundaries between them. That can leave students with a diminished experience of both.” We can’t forget that getting a whole experience of each level of our education system is part of our education system.

This is a veeeeery interesting read. I talk with a lot of 8th grade students and parents about whether they should enroll in AP, IB, and dual-enrollment classes when they go to high school. This would be great for them to read.

Starting July 19, I'll be attending the International Summer Academy at Auschwitz-Birkenau. If you're teaching about concentration camps and want to follow along, I'll post about what I learn here. Thanks to @auschwitzmemorial.bsky.social.

AI is just a labor replacer, clear and simple. Everything teachers are being encouraged to use AI to do - write objectives, modify texts, translation, etc. - is stuff that can be done better and with more care by a human being.

So this phrase “able-bodied” has clearly been on the most recent list of R talking points. It comes from the first round of English labor laws, which were instituted after the Black Death.

A mini medieval story time!

Jim Jordan: "If there's an able-bodied adult out there now who is in our welfare system, guess what -- that person is going to have to work ... that is far from immoral."

An absolutely monumental piece from @polgreen.bsky.social this morning. Appreciate the research, array of sources, and nuanced thinking on the complicated issue of migration.

A troubling deep dive. Reminds me of an assessment MS students in my district take every year. They must use sourcing to evaluate whether or not “The Dark Ages” was a good name for the medieval era. To get it right they have to consider the motivations of Victorian writers.

This is the struggle, which Kimmerer names so clearly. It’s not news that our system seeks to extract and commodify no matter the the impact on our world. But it’s always a struggle to help students reach this conclusion. We’ve mythologized the self made man so much it’s hard to hear other stories.

Hello Bluesky! I’m a middle school civics and social studies teacher. I’m on here mostly to talk with folks about helping young people learn to use their voice and navigate these times. #edusky
