The concept of the city being a "closed loop system" implicitly suggests that it will also be exclusively "closed" to house only a particular group of people, the elite. Yet again, BIG leads a project that thrives on social exclusion under the guise of equality, just like in Telosa. #newcities

So, in other words, this is essentially a cult. Yet, this time, it's a commune explicitly focused on far-right ideology, rather than an egalitarian utopian society. With right-wing politics gaining popularity, especially among young people, I worry that some may find genuine appeal. #newcities

The idea behind this is a bit unusual for its time, as Hong Kong essentially plans to export its ideals in a European enclave. It reminds me a lot of how Western powers would impose their specific visions of how society in the Global South should function. Yet, the roles are now flipped! #newcities

Belmont is such a textbook example of urban speculation. The media places a lot of emphasis on Bill Gates as the main asset behind Belmont, despite never having announced his participation. Instead, it came out that the investment firm purchased land for farming, not for city building... #newcities

It's awful that these highly ambitious development projects, which inevitably fail, become yet another burden for an already dysfunctional government to manage. This logic can surely unintentionally lock countries into poverty traps given fiscal deficits, and I fear Egypt could be next. #newcities

Most advertisements for "The Line" seem to push that social chaos could be stopped through uniform and vertical buildings with green space. It reminds me a lot of Le Corbusier's concept for "Ville radieuse." Interesting that planners are still trying modernism despite known criticisms. #newcities

Indonesia's attempt at modernizing its national identity sounds eerily similar to the rationale behind building Putrajaya from the 1990s. It would be interesting to see if there will be any lessons learned from Malaysia, or if Nusantara will have the same problems with local identities. #newcities

The sustainable narrative of this project is super intriguing. Wouldn't it make much more sense to adopt greening policies in Cancun without building an entirely new city from scratch in its name? This would certainly meet the emission reduction targets, if that's even the main goal here. #newcities

Ironic that Koen Olthuis, the leading architect behind the project, preaches his plans to create affordable housing on the island, yet he only has experience building luxury real estate projects. He even admits that he doesn't know how he will do this, and I certainly don’t doubt that. #newcities

So, a project claiming to be built on the principles of social equality, going as far as calling its most prominent building the "Equitism Tower," is being led by a billionaire... Sounds like a really interesting combination of ideas that I'm not sure I can get behind. #newcities

secure access to the Nile for agricultural production in an effort to boost economic growth. While the government claims that construction should last another 5 years, the country's increasing foreign debt could likely put the project dead in the water.

inspiration from worldbuilding in Marvel's Black Panther and collecting funds through crytopcurrency. However, with many setbacks ranging from a crytocurrency fail to the COVID-19 pandemic, only a plot of land grazed by goats exists, which has striked a cord among locals and international investors.

environmental deregulation practices from the administration, risking the destruction of local mangroves that agriculturalists in the region depend on. This approach to development reinforces that authoritarian tendencies keep turning up like a bad penny, but under the guise of innovation.

pollution in the country by creating affordable living spaces reminiscent of fishermen's houses. Questions remain about whether the Maldives Floating City will sink or swim with the predicted rise in sea levels, especially in a region already experiencing the early consequences of climate change.

following trends of transit-oriented urban design centred on sustainability, but reinterpreting them in the Canadian context. The project is currently attracting input from locals on how to proceed with development, and there is still a long way to go until the first buildings are set in stone.

region, starting with the completion of the Western Sydney International. Since this city aims to support the residential and commercial needs of the area, the uncertainty behind how developers plan to deal with nearby noise levels risks the project being a flight of fancy.

as an educational powerhouse. Unlike many other recent cities China has built, its design focuses on incorporating the local topography of terraced rice paddies, given its rural location. But moving past a digital rendering into actual planning and construction remains a mountain to climb.
