A couple of SES undergrad and grad classes have recently ventured to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado to learn about fundamental geological processes that have shaped this spectacular range. The fall foliage wasn't bad either :)

Last summer, NAU SES researchers collected ancient tundra plants uncovered by vanishing Brooks Range glaciers in Alaska. These fragile moss specimens provide evidence of when glaciers last advanced, creating a rare archive of Arctic climate history that is disappearing as the ice melts.

New paper alert! New research from former NAU PhD student Emerson Lynch, SES Prof @rengellia.bsky.social , and colleagues demonstrates that some upper plate faults in the Cascadia subduction zone are very active, with important earthquake hazards implications. Check it out! #nau_geology

NEW WARNING about ARCTIC WARMING: My new #sciart accompanies research by Ted Schuur, @ecoss-nau.bsky.social et al that carries urgent warnings for the effects that global warming is having on the Arctic: news.nau.edu/arctic-warmi...
illustration comparing the effects of 2 global warming scenarios: an increase of 1.5 vs. 2.7 celsius. The higher warming scenario will cause loss of all sea ice during Arctic summer, shrinking of Greenland's ice sheet, and thaw of roughly half of existing permafrost by the year 2100
